He didnt realise until he got back home. Anyway we was unsure what to do, but the shop phoned him within half an hour to ask if they had given him too much. We were very honest and told them yes we had and they were very grateful and came to my house to collect the extra money. When i have told people they all seem to think that i should have kept the money as the shop couldnt have provved it anyway! So what would you have all done? Was I too honest? Someone suggested that they could have at least given me some of it for being so honest lol.
Not really a dilema i guess...just after some of your opinions :-)
Well done for being honest, im a great believer in what goes round comes round so im sure something good will happen to you.
There are quite a few answers to this 1 depending on how big the shop is, what time of day it was etc. If it was only a small shop and early in the day not many transactions would have taken place so they would definitely know it was you and if you had lied and not given them the money then you probably would have got away with it but they would know and so would you so it depends if you have any conscience or not.
As for a reward you never know they may think about it and send you a goodwill gesture but im sure they are very grateful and if you go in when you next want a holiday they'll give you a very good discount, or next time you want some currency they may give you their best vip rate thats available instead of the download rate. The people that said you were daft obviously have no morals and dont have jobs that would sack them if their tills didnt balance. You've definitely saved the girl from some sort of warning or even the sack so go on holiday with the knowledge that your halo is glowing and have a great time.0 -
there may even have been a camera pointing at the notes being counted out0

As its dealt with I wouldnt worry about it, you did what was morally the right thing to do...well done.Yes people may say you should have kept it but until something actually happens to you,you really dont know how you would deal with it.The shop may have known it was your partner who had been given too much but obviously wont have come on the phone accusing him without giving him a chance..
Honesty is the best policy!!!! Am thinking of a new one:beer:0 -
I've worked in foreign exchange and it is the worse feeling ecer when you realise you have given too much money out.
Most of the time we can track it down to which customer it was due to reports, transaction numbers, CCTV etc but as others have mentioned, you probably have saved this persons job. Many people I have worked with have faced warnings and even lost thier jobs due to high levels of differences.
It should work the opposite way too, if you are given too little, the company or person should make the effort to track you down to give you the difference.
Similar thing happened to my Dad in M&S, he was given £1700 for €1700. He noticed straight away and told her, the poor girl was nearly in tears.Lightbulb moment Dec 2005 - debt £23700
June 2010 - £17984.210 -
Thanks everyone for your opinions. Yes i am glad that i was honest and really couldnt have lived with myself if i had denied it. After all it wasnt like the money was mine in the first place. Am glad that there are many honest people out there, just like me ;-)0

I work in a bank and mistakes do happen - both in the customers favour and against them too. The fact that the shop telephoned you so quickly is an indication that they knew they had over paid you. The person who served you would most definately been in for a disciplinary and my motto is alway do unto others as they would do unto you. Simple.0

You did the right thing.
Keep your eye on anyone who tells you that you should have kept the money, don't leave any of your possessions around them!.....0
