Dilema...thomas cook gave me too many euros!!!

Right then...My partner went to Thomas Cook yesterday to get our euros for the weekend, and the woman gave him 1000 (yes 1000 lol) too much. He didnt realise until he got back home. Anyway we was unsure what to do, but the shop phoned him within half an hour to ask if they had given him too much. We were very honest and told them yes we had and they were very grateful and came to my house to collect the extra money. When i have told people they all seem to think that i should have kept the money as the shop couldnt have provved it anyway! So what would you have all done? Was I too honest? Someone suggested that they could have at least given me some of it for being so honest lol.
Not really a dilema i guess...just after some of your opinions :-)

Why would you need a reward for been honest ?
I've worked for Cooks you probably saved someone from getting fired-Hopefully that's reward enough

No I think you did the right thing.
People think you should have kept some because that is what the world is like now and it's very sad. Just because somebody made a mistake doesn't mean you should gain from it financially, not when it hasn't caused you any loss or inconvenience. Think happy & you'll be happy
I :heart2: my doggies

id have to say, honesty is the best policy in this. they called within 1/2 hour, its not like they left it 2 weeks then rang on the off-chance. which would tempt me to 'forget'Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000

I was buying Turkish Lire last month, Only wanted £100 , so kind lady in Thomas Cook , counted out the notes in front of me:D
My problem , had not really thought how many Lire I should receive.
Following morning , Panic call from Thomas Cook
They had only given me the equivalent of £50
Their accounts had flagged up a problem when they checked their till at close of play.
Lots of red faces when I went back , but they had made a genuine mistake, and sorted it out quickly .... with an apology.
OP No I think you did the right thing.0 -

Of course, it would be theft or fraud at best. Both obviously criminal offences.
I'd seriously question the morals of anyone who would have stolen money like that. Who are these "people" you're talking about? Friends of yours? Who really thinks it would be worth a stretch inside? and a criminal record?
Also anyone who thinks that they should get a "reward" for not committing a criminal offence is a little bit twisted would you not say?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Once I used Travelex at the airport but pre booked on the internet for a better rate.
When I got back from holiday there was a letter explaining due to some problem they were unable to charge my credit card and could i send a cheque instead.
I sent the cheque and in return they said thanks and sent me £40 in Debenhams gift vouchers.0 -

Oh yes?
I think they might well have done the same if they managed to identify you and they found they were up at the end of the day.
A big surplus is as difficult to justify as a big loss when you are cashing up.0
