Do you always get proof of postage?

  • You have to ask for the claim forms; they are kept behind the counter. Or you can download from the post office website.

As I said in a previous post, there are none kept at the crown I go to, in another crown PO I asked, and they only gave me one!

If you sell through paypal proof of postage isn't worth the paper its written on unless you are planning on claiming against the PO for loss of goods.

If a buyer diputes recieving an item they will always get their money back unless you sent the item via special or recorded delivery, ie where it is signed for.

Thank you for your comments. Can I ask a further question? If these POPs are useless in a PayPal dispute why do people get them at all?

Am I right in assuming that if the item gets lost in the post (or rather if the buyer says it did not turn up) then the RM compensates you. Do they pay you the cost of the item? If I sell a book for £5.00 say and it gets lost do the RM pay me the £5 back? How can I prove it was worth that much?

Excuse me if I am being stupid, but I do not know how this system works.

You have a POP to enable you to claim from RM if any item goes missing. You can prove item worth by using the a print out of the auction listing.
  • Hello all, first time posting here! :)

Would just like to ask a question too... Just last month I posted off an item that was worth £15 via first class stamp and got POP, and on the POP it says it covers up to a value of £39. It got lost, I filed a claim with the PO and they say I should've sent it with Special Delivery or Recorded, so they can't compensate me. So what is the ruddy point of obtaining POP then?! It was an Ebay item, and it wasn't money or jewellery.

Another question, if you sent a gift card in the mail by first class and obtained POP, would it still be protected? Or would I need to send it by Recorded/Special Delivery?

What was the item? I would complain and point out that you have adhered to there rules (as long as you have)
  • I've only once had a problem when the buyer told me that the item was broken in transit, so claimed from the PO. They gave me the price of the item (in stamps) BUT didn't refund my postage which I thought was rather unfair.

I believe that gift vouchers must be sent by Special Delivery to claim if they go missing. Feel free to correct me somebody if I'm wrong.

EDIT: Quote from the Royal Mail website:

Can I send valuable items (e.g. cash, jewellery, tickets & vouchers) by Recorded Signed For™?
No, valuable items should be sent using our Special Delivery™ 9.00am service or Special Delivery™ Next Day.
  • Sent my first thing without getting PoP and it arrived ok :j

Why would you do this when POP is free? Its not like its costing you anything
