Ah yes, on the Mirena the other side effect is that my periods have totally stopped but the bf may be helping too. I didn't consider that a side effect just a huge bonus!
  • My wife came off the pill because she'd been taking it for ages and was worried about the health implications. She moved onto the coil which was painless to fit and she had no sensation of it being there. Did the job with absolutely no side effects.

Only concern that she had at the time was that there is supposed to be a thread at the bottom of the coil which you can sense with your finger to make sure that it's there. In all the time that it was fitted she never could feel the thread but it had obviously not come out so it had to be there.

When we wanted to start a family the coil was removed with no bother. Got two lovely sons and I've since had the snip. Can't afford any more kids but still at it like bunnies...

    Good luck!

The Mirena - no periods and an improved sex drive - HEAVEN

    Well thats my experience anyways:D
  • Try a family planning clinic - would be a lot better than listening to us lot who have no qualifications to recommend anything...

  • Hiya, I also suffer from migraines and I'm now regularly seeing a specialist. She put me on Cerazette contraceptive pill, safe for migraine sufferers. It's a mini pill that you take every single day - no breaks for a period.

I would say that any woman who is using a form of contraception IS qualified to give her own experience. Its not like anyone is saying that anyone method is the one true method and the OP has to go with that. All we are doing is sharing experience

I'm on it too because of my high BMI and can't wait to get off it

I've heard it causes problems if you want to concieve at a later date (for me this would be next year) and is currently stopping any diet from working :(
  • Hi there, you are right about lots of doctors being poorly informed on contraceptive choices, they also often let costs issues influcence their advice, Mirena especially is very expensive and doctors may be reluctant to recommend it especially if you do not plan to have it in for the full five years. However a family planning clinic would be a good option, they have great knowledge and give excellent advice.

I have a Mirena and it is great, I had previously had a combined pill which gave me bad headaches, and depo which I didn't have problems with but do believe contributed to weight gain.

If you were ok with depo generally you are unlikely to suffer any nasty side effects from Mirena as the hormone used is the same just in a lower dose so weight gain spottiness etc should also be less. It is also the same hormone in the implant and mini pill, Mirena uses less as it is deposited exactly where you need it!

It isn't exactly pleasent having it fitted, sort of like a more uncomfortable smear and you will probably have cramps after but since having it I've had no periods and no side effects, normally I can't feel it and neither can DH (though I did have to get the thread shortened). I've had mine nearly 4 years and will have another when this one is removed, I have not had any children either (it is more difficult to fit if you haven't, which makes some doctors reluctant - another good reason to go to the FPA).

The huge advantage for many of Mirena is that it is instantly reversible whereas depo can take several months to work its way out of your system as can the pill. It is also the most reliable form of contraception after sterilisation!

A lot depends upon whether you have children, whether you want more and if so how soon, as well as how you would feel about an "accident". The cap or even persona (rythm method) can suit some but their reliability isn't the same as many other methods so are perhaps only suitable if a baby wouldn't be disasterous for you at this stage. The implant or mirena are more long term solutions. Most doctors will be very unwilling to give a copper coil if you haven't had children, and it can also cause worse periods.

Hope that gives you some food for thought.
  • Can I ask a question to those of you in the know please ?

I had the Mirena Coil fitted 6 months ago to combat extremely heavy periods. I am not having to use it for contraception as DH had the snip after the birth of our two children !

I am sat here at the moment feeling the worse kind of labour like pains as I am due on - I was advised that after 6 months my periods would more or less stop. Last month I had a heavy period, the month before a light one - is this normal ? When I first had it fitted my next period lasted 3 weeks !

I am seriously considering having it removed and begging the GP for a hysterectomy as I am sick of having to suffer every month - who would be a woman eh ?
