Advice on contraception please!

Hi all, I know this is probably not the best message board to ask this on, but I trust I will get honest opinions hopefully.
I wanted a new method of contraception and the coil of either types seems to be my only option. Do any MSE members use or have used this method.
Some back ground. I was on the pill for years with no real problems, apart from a few headaches. I moved house and moved Dr's surgerys as a result. Being a new patient the Dr's very rightly reviewed my contraception methods and took my off the pill. I smoked (although just quit :T) there was history of Migraines in my family, even though I dont suffer from them as such, just head aches, and my blood pressure at the time was high. I'm not sure if it still is, but I think it has gone down.
So I put onto the injection which really suits me apart from weight gain, I've put on about 15lbs despite being on a diet alllll of the time. I also wonder if the Depo injection is resonsible for other things, like low sex drive. I have no periods though which is awesome!
So yeah, sorry for the long post, if anyone has any advice about the coil or any other methods that might suit and I haven't heard of, not including condoms. I am all ears and eager to hear.
thank you all.

Hi, you could consider the cap, its fiddly at first but once you get used to it its really really good. Its not for the squemish though but you are in control and best of all no interferance with hormones or side effects, you would need to talk to your GP or family planning and they would need to fit you for one - hth:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

I have a Mirena coil. It was very painful to have it fitted but I know others who found it fine so it probably differs from person to person. It has so far been reliable! The only side effect I am having is bad hormonal acne either side of my chin, but until I stop breastfeeding I am sticking with the coil with a view to switch to the combined pill after and hopefully have clear skin again.0

If you do a search you'll find a discussion on sterilisation, I know that isnt what you're looking for but all the other methods of contraception are discussed in that thread, You need to discuss with your doctor or family planning clinic (CASH). Also have a look at the www.patient.co.uk website.
If you smoke or have a history of migraines, clots etc you cant have contraception which contains oestrogen, besides the oestrogen can contribute to the headaches.
Progesterone only contraception:
POP (Pill)
Implanon (slow hormone releasing tube injected into your arm, lasts 3 years)
Mirena (progesterone containing coil, lasts 5 years)
Copper coil (no hormone, slow release of copper particles, last 5 years)
etc, etc0 -
Thanks all. What's a cap though. Am I being dense, its not one of those really old fashioned circle things is it? Does any one have the none hormonal coil? The copper one?Wins for 2013: Cafetiere (£40), Mangajo Drinks, Alan Partridge goodies0

:rotfl:yes it is the old fashioned circle thing, its proper name is a diaphragm, not for everyone admittedly but highly effective when used properly and great if you prefer or need something that doesn't interfere with your natural rhythm, just a suggestion, best of luck:) heres a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaphragm_(contraceptive)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

Never really heard of that one, it looks very fiddly, but its certainly something I can broach with the Dr's. I like the idea of none hormonal methods, because surely it must be interfering with something having our bodies pumped with hormones.

Might I be able to use the POP (Pill), even though I have been told previously I can't have the pill?Wins for 2013: Cafetiere (£40), Mangajo Drinks, Alan Partridge goodies0

I'm on the Pill, have been for a few years due to extremely painful periods. Have been told I need to lose weight (due to a different medication) or they'll need to change what I'm on. I smoke, and there's a history of heart disease (my granddad has had a triple heart bypass, my dad has high cholesterol but both mum and dad have low blood pressure, so mine is - when I'm not overweight - abnormally low - 70/110. Amusing as my dad wasn't allowed the cholesterol tabs until his blood pressure went up) All they do is keep an eye on me a LOT more (every timew I get a repeat it's only for 6 months, and my blood pressure and weight is checked every time without fail.** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

Those of you that are on 'A' pill and you smoke etc, will be on the progesterone only pill (POP) or mini pill as its sometimes referred to. You wouldnt be on on the combined pill. If you are then you need to seek medical advice.0

Ive got one!
I cant use any hormone based contraception, and I can honestly say that the copper coil has changed my life. It was horrible having it fitted, dont get me wrong, but it can be left in for up to 10 years. Seriously, its amazing. And ive had NO side effects whatsoever at all....You lied to me Edward. There IS a Swansea. And other places.....
