Abbey One Time Passcode - OTP

You can use internet banking without a mobile phone, see my earlier posts. The only thing which slows things up is if you want to set up a new payment and you will have to go via telephone banking instead.
I do not have a mobile phone but still use my 2 current accounts and 3 savings accounts online.
Either this is not true, or Abbey have changed it.
When it was first introduced back in August, you needed to use your mobile for every single transaction that involved sending money to an external account, it was not just for setting up a new payment. You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.0 -
Just last week I sent £10 from Abbey current to my normal current account with Lloyds. Lloyds c.a. is already listed as one of my normal payees, so the payment went through as it always has done without having to use the OTP. I still believe it is only required when setting up the initial payment to someone new.0

That makes me feel slightly better about OTP... only slightly better but at least it looks like Abbey have relented slightly, which is good! You're spelling is effecting me so much. Insulting to say the least and arrogant as well. I find it offensive for you to tell us that we are living in the dark ages! Who are you to tell me that I should have a mobile phone just for emergencies? Do you know my personal circumstances and know whether I can afford to have one?
I would point out that other banking systems operate secure systems as well, using landline telephone numbers i.e. Lloyds - no need to have a mobile phone number with them.
As I see you are new member, I would suggest you make any additional comments on the forum in a more considerate manner.
Im sure you can buy a mobile phone for £10. Im sure you could afford that??0 -

Some countries don't allow international SIM cards which is besides the fact that many areas don't even have a signal. For example, where I frequenty travel to in Central America, the majority businesses in smaller towns opt out of allowing international calls in or out, especially when all of the telecommunications and mobile network is nationally controlled.
So - there I am, often relying on finding an Internet Cafe which is actually open AND has Internet connection. There I can merrily conduct all of my banking in the UK as necessary - which understandably IS necessary during periods of 4-6 months away......and naturally I rely on being able to fully operate my accounts online.
Now some ignorant plonker has come out with this nonsensical, ill-thought-out idea of OTP...........quite clearly this stupid individual hasn't ever travelled outside of Western society.
At this moment in time, it appears to the best of my knowledge that I now have 5 weeks precisely to change to a bank that will allow me to operate ALL of my online banking in peace, as, how and when I need to.
With the busy Christmasperiod coming up I am livid - and absolutely fuming with this stupid Spanish bank Santander:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Like everything else that infests us from the other side of the English channel, it creates nothing but trouble and hassle.

Everone else seems to have the problem that they don't want to own or use a mobile phone. My problem is that we don't have a mobile signal. I have just started looking after all accounts and bill payments online and it is really useful becauese we live nearly an hour away from the nearest bank. I was told that I could set up new payments over the phone and then I would be able to use them as normal online. Today I had to send my student daughter some money as she has run out. So I phoned up to set up a new payment and was told I had to go to the bank (on sunday!!) and that even then I wouldn't be able to send her regular payments except with the text message system. I was told that they couldn't use my landline because you can't send texts to a landline, but you can, it is just translated into an automated voice text. I would dump Abbey but i don't think anyother bank would have us and how would I get paid ( I work freelance from home) and how would I pay my bills as they are all going over to direct debits etc. Any advice?
We are in exactly the same position, we have no mobile signal here and I am miles away from a bank, which I can never get to when it's open even if i wanted to due to work.
It's disgusting that Abbey are discriminating against some customers like this, they are effectively removing all the internet banking features that I use several times a week on the sole basis that I don't have a mobile phone signal.
I am angry as hell.0 -
I have just tried to log in to my Abbey account and the message appeared saying it is mandatory to register for OTP.
I duly entered my mobile number then a screen appeared saying they were unable to register my details, however I then received a text confirming my registration!0
