Had the Visa Debit card declined twice on a train (NXEC) for the sum of £39, Visa CC went through ok.
Halifax say the card is a full Visa Debit and no restrictions on offline-authorisations etc, they say the card is faulty, it is not, I told them that they have programmed the card incorrectly, they said no they have not.
Fraud dept say no restrictions, underwriting dept say no restrictions;
MSE clever people, any clues please?
Addendum; Used card on train different company before no issues, lower amount (£15) but NXEC use different terminals to Northern Trains.

Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Could be a number of reasons, I susect that NXEC operates like many mobile terminals in an off-line state but via an ICC reader....
Have you used your debit card before today?
I have no experience of the Halifax, but it could be your profile for offline purchases is low / not set. In theory the chip cards can push for authorisation on 'certain' amounts. Basically a floor limit. The bank are never going to tell you this amount as it leaves them open to widescale fraud. These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!
I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!0 -

I was informed that the purchase value of the ticket was not that great as to decline the card, she did however state that as a comparison trying to make a £1000 purchase would be a problem in off-line mode.Could be a number of reasons, I susect that NXEC operates like many mobile terminals in an off-line state but via an ICC reader....

So why when all relevant depts. state that I have a full current account and Debit card would it not work?
First time I have had issues, even used it in an old click-clack machine recently too.

Could be that you reached a cumulative offline limit. This would explain the problem appearing to be intermittent.
Not sure if the issuer will tell you what these limits are though. Either the advisor you speak to simply isn't aware of them or they might refuse on fraud prevention grounds.
I think this is covered by the forthcoming EU Payment Services Directive - issuers need to advise their customers of restrictions affecting how the payment account can be used, or something to that effect. The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.0 -

No, it is a full Visa Debit; I use it on other trains offline and works fine.never-in-doubt wrote: »Does it have CGC on it? If so then deffo isn't all authorisation card, if it doesn't have the CGC then i'd say it is a full auth one regardless of what Hfx say - after all, it is Hfx we're talking about here.
I have requested the CG function however I was informed by underwriting it is irrelevant weather the card has the CG function or not.

Since they are phasing it out, it would no longer be a guarantee that not having the guarantee symbol makes it a card that is always supposed to be authorised, if that is not a bit of a back to front way of putting it.0 -

Yes, many banks now issue Visa Debits Cards without the CG functionality, and as you stated just because the Visa does not have the GC £50/£100/£250 Symbol on it, does not mean it is a Full-Authorisation card.Since they are phasing it out, it would no longer be a guarantee that not having the guarantee symbol makes it a card that is always supposed to be authorised, if that is not a bit of a back to front way of putting it.
The question in many credit applications is "Do you have a cheque guarantee card?" Well that should be removed as answering no will lower your credit score (Application Score) and to honest is not really required anymore.
I am still waiting on an answer from the bank as to why this occurred, what would have happened if I didn’t have my Credit Card on me? Probably told to leave the train at the next stop.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. HBOS are no longer issuing CG cards anymore; they are trying to "wean" their customers off using cheques.
This information has been quoted by their business centre, didn’t get refused one just that they no longer issue them anymore.
