MOBILES DIRECT!! This company has got my girlfriend into debt.

HI people,

My girlfriend recieved a call form MOBILES DIRECT some months ago and they offered her a great contract with great prices for her to call home to Portugal and free calls and all the usual bits and bobs. When they asked her if she was interested she said "yeah, why not, it sounds good but I need to cancel my Vodafone contract or maybe change the tariff its on so I pay much less and I won't use the phone", MOBILES DIRECT, said that she "didn't need to worry about Vodafone because MOBILES DIRECT will cancel her contract for her and there won't be any charge and she will be left with just your '3 mobile' contract to pay, but the contract will take 3 months to cancel and they offered to pay her the minimum of her 3mobile bill, which on her tariff is £50".
She agreed to the contract and they sent the phone etc and as promised they paid her £50 cash direct into her account for the 1st 3 months after we faxed them the bill, which seemed to her as good practice form this company and was genuinely happy they kept their promise to pay her bill.
The problem is that they never cancelled her contract with Vodafone and Vodafone never sent any bills or letters to her and she thought that it had been dealt with by MOBILES DIRECT. Now she recieved a creditor's notice from CapQuest stating that she must pay £413.30p or county court claim will be issued. The letter is dated 2nd of May but she recieved the letter to her old address which Vodafone had already been informed had changed.
What can she do? Is it possible to claim against MOBILES DIRECT or have them pay this? She doesn't have any sort of document stating they offered to cancel nor does she have any contract document in paper/writing for her 3mobile contract. She has always had great credit and never had any problem with gettig credit, but just recently she has been turned down for everything and she has been told her credit is not good. What can she do to restore her credit because this is genuinely the fault of others who were trying to make a sale.

Did she get her Vodafone contract from Mobiles Direct? She should have got something about the 3 contract from Mobiles Direct which would have confirmed the order along with the handset etc.
Just wondering why they called her out of the blue to offer her a contract. I don't really know anything about the company but have you asked them if they record calls and have anything on record at all?
