£80.08 to leave BT!?

Hello everyone.
About a year ago I've signed up for BT's 'Unlimited Evenings & Weekend Plan'. I now want to move to another provider but BT inform me that to do so will cost me a princely sum of £80.08!!!
Having another - this time a more careful look at their confirmation letter - I now realise that to cancel here, you have to do it before the 12 months is up, whereas in other circumstances a 12 month contract means that you have to stay for at least 12 months.
This is what I carelessly assumed - lesson learned!
However, a little way down the same paragraph of this letter it says: "We will write to you near the time to remind you that the end of your minimum period is approaching and letting you know what to do."
This reminder I have not received.
Though I accept that it's largely my own fault, I do feel a little aggrieved.

If you have not received a letter (many did not) BT will let you cancel the rolling contract because they are in the wrong. See this thread herePortlandbill wrote: »

Thank you both.
I've looked through the links you provided but can not see any advice therein on how to proceed from here.
espresso,
in your link 'onslo' (in the last entry) referes to a BT forum which he found helpfull, do you know which one it is or have you a link to it?
Sorry to sound so thick but I really have no idea what to search for or where to search.
Tried "BT cancelation charges" but got even more confused.

You could try here or one of the BT Company Reps that post on the MSE forum should be able to help you. Try sending a PM to them, although members are always saying that their inbox is always full - they obviously get far too many of complaints! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Hi winterrobin
I can confirm on the Evening and Weekend renewable deal if you take up the offer you are put on a 12 month contract. We send out letters to our customers when your contract is coming up to expire. On the letter it advises you that if you do not contact BT to cancel your contract your offer will automatically be renewed on a new 12 month contact.
If you do not want to stay with BT for another 12 months I would advise you to contact BT stating you do not want your contract to be renewed before your current contract expires. If you contact BT after the date your current contract ends and you have automatically been renewed you would be held to term for the rest of your contract if you cancelled your services with BT.
I hope this helps

What about the many customers that did not receive this letter? I for one did not get a letter before the anniversary date, giving me the option to cancel. BT cannot renew the rolling contract if no letter was sent out. Your reply is not very helpful. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
