cartrawler car hire

Please advise,
I had booked a hire car using Cartrawler of Dublin from the web, the booking was made well in advance in fact I booked in November 2008 and paid in full using a credit card and received confirmation. On arrival at Faro airport Portugal in July 2009 I was told no car was available and after contacting Cartrawler received no help to resolve the situation. After some two hours I then had to rent a car from Avis on the spot market at extra cost. On return from holiday I contacted Cartrawler who stated by phone to process a claim by e mail, however they did not respond to any of my e mails.
The credit card I used for payment at the time of booking was closed before I went on holiday, the question is can I still make a claim against the card with it being no longer active.
What’s the best approach to claim the difference and even compensation?
