Reclaiming charges made from a stolen phone

Hi all, I have a major problem with a t-mobile phone bill which was run up in the three days after I had my phone stolen. By the time i cancelled the contract £1000 of calls had been made to Gambia.

When i called customer services firstly I was told i would have to pay £500, the second time nothing and the third time I was told to pay the bill in full.

Is there any legal protocol for me having/not having to pay the bill? I assumed t-mobile would have a system to protect customers from this situation similar to that used by banks when you take out money abroad.

Any help would be incredibly gratefully recieved, as a student £1000 is not an amount of money I have sitting around

Many thanks

Peter

Important thing is to realise that in law you are liable for the costs until you notify network and sim is cancelled. I think you know that.

Now - how to mitigate your damages. 1st of all, ask politely for some leeway from the network. You may need to seek a supervisor or manager's help and remember that you are asking them for dispensation and that the boot is very firmly on their foot, so be polite and reasonable.

You will be very lucky indeed if you are not asked for a contribution to the bill, so be prepared.

You are a student and it's holiday time. Guess you may be living at home. Have you checked with your parents to see if their household insurance covers such a loss? Worth doing.

    Good luck.
