QOn the flip side, if you're planning to listen to mp3's at low bitrate, even a good system can't get good quality out. If you do decide to rip CD's, rip at the highest bitrate and save to a non lossy format. It's the only way to keep the quality.

Given that most people can't tell the difference between a CD and an 128 kbps AAC file, that might not be much of an issue.

Everyone's hearing is different, so there's not much point encoding a 30 MB lossless file if you can't tell the difference between it and a 10 MB AAC file.

There's no correct bit-rate or format to rip to that will suit everyone.

Perfectly true, but I certainly can tell the difference through Quad pre-amp and amp, and some fairly high end HiFi speakers. Some audiophiles are even turning back to vinyl because apparently CD's aren't at a high enough quality for them. To be fair, though, I haven't tested my HiFi with a computer with a decent sound card, so it might be the digital to analogue converter in my ipod causing the problem.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

Why not go into John Lewis and Richer Sounds and hear some?

It's probably going to be as good as anything you'll get for that sort of money with DAB, dock and CD. I'd hazard it'll sound better than a Technika.

You can but it sounds carp. A dedicated dock will sound better but you'll never get hi-fi sound out of either an iPod or a unit that costs £100.

From a £100 unit, I don't think your going to notice the difference between the dock connector line-out and the heaphone socket (especially if you find a headphone out volume level that equates to line out levels and don't overdrive the input).

This looks really good but any suggestions on a similar product that is less expensive - looking for presents for the children at Christmas
