 Having a right morning!!
Firstly, I have always said I wouldn't let Geni, my kitten upstairs. She's only ickle, about 11wks now but has began to jump my cardboard barrier. I go and fetch her, say no and bring her back down. However, this isn't working!
I can't even go upstairs to the toilet without her coming. Even worse, i was getting changed to go out last night, she came in my room, hid under my bed and wouldn't come out!! So i was actually late leaving as i leave her in the kitchen when i go out, which she is normally fine with!
What else can i do?!
Also, she's been eating Whiskas kitten food. However, this is getting pricey but i don't really know which other kind to buy! She prefers wet food in Gravy rather than Jelly. Can anyone recommend something slightly cheaper? [She'll soon be getting through 1.5 pouches!].
Thanks in advance, i'm off to regain my sanity! X

the whiskas pouches are 2 for £5.50 in sainsburys at the mo!
try leaving a good quality dry food down when you go out, my (15 week old) kitten now eats both!
Why aren't you letting her upstairs, out of interest?

Just because i've recently moved in and don't want her rippin up my new carpets, not sure she would but you never know! Also, there is alot of nooks and crannies so i might never find her again, hahaha.
I have laminate in living room so that's fine really, as well as in the kitchen.0 -
When I got my first cat,I was told she would only eat Whiskas - well, I soon put a stop to that and both of them were brought up on a diet of dried food supplemented by 'treats'.
I had my 12 year old cat checked over by a vet a few weeks ago and the vet said it was nice to see an older cat that was in such good shape.
She has access to the dried food at all times, although she does have a small amount of wet food in the mornings (literally a few tablespoons) as a treat, which she goes mental for.
Mine have always had the run of the whole house as well - although even if we wanted to, we wouldn't be able to stop her going upstairs as my house is open plan.0 -
i thought ripping up carpets was a dog thing lol
all i can say is mine is ok with carpets, and you may be making life complicated unneccessarily by keeping the cat downstairs

We have a kitten here (felt ready again and the kids wanted one-lost 2 cats I had,had for a long time over about 6 months, 3 years ago.
Our kitten tom is now pretty big and about 15 weeks (think he is going to be a big lad lol), we gave up with kitten pouches as it simply didn't fill him up, so he has normal tins (one spread out over the day) with a sprinkle of kitten biscuits. We have wiskas and felix, but as OH has a SE business we can get these from a wholesaler in bulk which makes it cheaper, just means stuff stacked up in the garage lol.
We get him to sleep downstairs as thats were his litter tray is plus he might disturb the kids as he seems to have a "mad hour or so" from about 8.30 onwards, but he is allowed to roam during the day.
Cats tend to scratch up carpets in a corner, very often behind a peice of furniture so you can't see. Try one of those scratching toys with the carpet on they love those, but don't be suprised if you pull something out one day and find a few frayed edges. Mind you nothing like the damage a dog could cause.

I agree, I think you might be setting yourself up for a fall with the downstairs only thing - come back to us in a year and tell us where the cat is allowed to go

Joking aside, if you teach her to use a scratching post from an early age you shouldn't have any problems with the carpets. I can see why people wouldn't want pets in the bedroom at night (although my two cats have free range, it is their house after all, I am merely a guest
) but I don't see the harm in allowing her to roam freely in the rest of the house. 0 -
Our are banned from the bedroom at night (and ideally during the day, but sometimes they let themselves in... sigh)
As a result, the carpet around the threshold of the bedroom has suffered. My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
That's like mine fay, outside my bedroom door it's all frayed, have managed to get the kitten to stop doing that by pouring some lemon juice over the area. The older is daft, and can't work out how to open doors that are ajar, which is annoying, so she does that to my carpets when you aren't quick enough to let her through!
I keep my kitten out my bedroom, because he climbs the clothes horse and puts holes in my clothes!0 -
If you keep all the doors shut upsatirs it will probaly seem less appealing. TBH I have no idea how to make a kitten do anything but my neighbour has a no upstairs rule and it seems to work (sort of) I think consistency is the key and a deep voice.0

Thanks all for your advice. I am going to allow her up the stairs but keep doors shut. However, i will keep her in kitchen at night so she's not pawing and crying at my bedrrom door, can hear her in kitchen loud enough!!0
