Buying the iphone 3gs on PAYG
Hubby saved his pennies for the new iphone 3gs 16gig. Went along to the Carphone Warehouse, they had one in but would not sell him one on PAYG due to "lack of stock". Same thing at the local O2 store, only on contract. Rang Apple direct on their free phone number yesterday afternoon and was put though to a very nice man in the USA who could not have been more pleasant to deal with! Guess what? The phone will be here this morning by UPS and it will be on O2 payg. So if anyone wants the 16gig Iphone on payg just go direct to Apple and have great customer service and hard luck to the local stores who did not want our money! :T:beer:

How much was one to buy from USA? i have looked on UK Apple website and they are £440.40 which is a bit steep for me0

Same price as over here. It is a lot of money but he so wanted one! I will stick with my ASDA payg I think!0

A bargain, if you ask me. It's a complete entertainment and information system. I get my emails, phone of course, text message, ipod for music and films/videos which you can download directly, lots of useful applications at your fingertips and lots of great games, you don't need anything else. My colleague has sold his PSP now.

I went into my local Apple store and bought a 16GB one there and then, came home unlocked it and put my old Orange SIM into it
I did have a 2G iPhone which (after selling the new upgrade from Orange) cost me £170. This 3Gs version cost me £145 after selling my old 2G iPhone and my Wii (which I never use) to pay for it.
So not too bad price wise. I'll probably keep this 3Gs one until it breaks, or until Apple bring out an amazing iPhone that I just can't live without, but definitely won't be until 2011 at earliest0 -
You DO know you'll be paying import duty and VAT if shipped from the USA? And that PAYG does not provide the cut-price data access required for a Broadband-hungry handset like the Apple? You'll be topping it up daily!0

would i be ok to buy an unlocked iphone and put my orange contract sim in it? would it all still work the same way?0 -
I seriously doubt that the phone sold to this person is from American stock, especially as they called the official Apple sales line! It might have been an American person, but it was a British sale, and as such includes VAT etc.0

You need to make sure you have some sort of internet on your contract.. i did it with my work sim card, and they gave me a little bollocking for racking up £70 of internet in a month.. this was only work e-mail and calendar usage via exchange.. oops..
no matter now, as work are getting me a shiny blackberry...0 -

That is not correct, LindaMary is not going to pay any import duty.
Mobile phones have no import duty, when you import them into the EU, from anywhere in the world. This applies also to the iPhone, even though it has advanced computing and video recording capabilities. What matters is that its primary use is to call people.
However, you'll be paying import VAT of 15%.
Hope this helps
