Help with ADSL account

Hello

I use the internet a fair bit and currently have a BT Openworld 8Mb ADSL service at home.

My dad has a BT Openworld 2Mb (basic) ADSL service at his place.

Is my ADSL account is “tied-up” to my home phone line only or can I use my ADSL account just like a normal dial-up account (where I can use it from any phone). In other words, is it possible for me to occasionally log in as myself using my own username and password and therefore benefit from the much quicker 8Mb ADSL service from my dad’s place? As far as I am aware, his local exchange supports the 8Mb service.

Many thanks

I would be pretty much sure you cannot do that

I've heard of people doing this on exactly the same ISP and type of account (i.e. login in to their account from different locations as long as both lines were enabled for the same type of account from the same ISP). I've heard of this working in this instance.

Not sure whether this would work for you though.................

Your dad is on an ADSL service (2Mb), and it sounds like you are on ADSL Max (8Mb).

Even though you are on the same ISP network, I would be interested to see if this works. Why not give it a try and let us know. Take care to remember your dads login details before you login with your own though (so you can re-enter them after you try), and make sure you are not logged in at home at the same time (unplug modem/router before you try).

I'd be interested to see the results of this one (although I don't hold out much hope).........

You may be able to log-in using your own BTopenworld log-in details on your Dad's line whihc is also BTopenworld.

However, unless your Dad's line was activated since 01/04/06 I very much doubt you will see 8Mbps speeds on your Dad's line as he will still be on the BTw IPstream Home 2000 product. I expect he's probably got a 2276Kbps sync at the moment.

If BT regrade his line to BTw IPstream Max, you will see his sync changes up to 8Mbps (or whatever the line will support) - however, if he is on the standard 2Mbps package BT may throttle it back to 2Mbps. Only when he has an 8Mbps sync, will your theory of using your own log-in details work (your log-in details will only drive what profile is used on the BTopenworld network - it will not affect the actual sync speed which is determined by the BTw IPstream product you are on).

    Hope that helps.

The answer is no and there are two reasons why:

    1) To get 8mb MaxADSL at your dad's place he will need to upgrade to the MaxADSL service. (See above replies)

    2) I believe BT Openworld no longer need login details for ADSL. See this old article: http://www.uk-bug.net/Article247.html. I certainly remember that the wireless router BT gave me recently had some dummy username filled in and worked ok. All it needs is the "@btopenworld.com" part.
