  • That's a really lovely thought - is it a male or female friend? I guess it's basic training - do you know where they're going for training?

Maybe something to remind them of home? Sounds corny but it can help through the tough times.

    Avoid expensive items.

Rooms can be shared with usually about 16 people, therefore 2 wardrobes with very poor locks.

How about 2 decent combination padlocks..
An ironing board (personal ironing board is worth it, no queue's)

Ironing board and iron is always a must. Padlocks are a good idea, combo ones means you dont forget/loose keys.

Nothing expensive really, you might like to get them somthing for when they graduate training, so that is a two in one present !!

brilliant thanks everyone! the locks a good idea :-)

I was thinking a little hamper of things like toothpaste, toothbrush, shower gel, shampoo, blister plasters (i'm sure they'll marched his backside off!) that sort of thing - would that be allowed? or do they get given all that?? (Sorry i don't know anyone else in the army)

Its a guy and he's off the the Marines we are all very proud of him :-)

That would be fine, we had one of the Marines training teams take us through basics so I am well equipped to answer.

This might seem like a wierd suggestion but I am sure it would be allowed. The cleaner you get from Halfords, Swarfega is great at getting all the grime, grease and dirt from your hands when you come out of the field. He might think a wierd present but will appreciate it, especially when the rest of the guys are having to scrub themselves with a scrubbing brush. You can get it in gel and wipes, the wipes can be taken in the field and used to get all the cam cream off before an inspection in the morning.
