Edinburgh Places To Stay & Visit.
We are hoping to get away for a few days at the end of the month :T
Wonder if anyone has any suggestions of places to stay &/or visit.
I hope to go see Little Sparta the garden of Ian Hamilton Finlay in the Pentland Hills.
We like gardens & galleries & architecture - green & modern as well as old.
We don't have a lot of money so aim to try & stay cheapish if possible, but would love a bath & some comfort as we are currently living in caravan - so can't wait!
Managed to book one cheap night in a travel lodge - but that was the only night on offer at a lowish rate & also one night in Falkirk on the way down. Anyone have any suggestions on places to visit there as I don't know the place at all. Or anywhere in the borders.
Cheers.

roslyn chapel is a must, its a bit out of the way from the city centre but easily reachable by car, it has the history, architecture and the scenery.
st giles cathedral for a wander round inside,go and have alook at the knights chapel inside there.
then theres the castle, its a bit too toursity and will be mobbed.
or a ghost walk at night through the dungeons.
or east fortune air museum, concorde is there, you can get inside it and see all the other planes aswell, this would fill a day easily and its pretty cheap.
theres lots to do in edinburgh,im sure theres even a sticky at the top of the page....work permit granted!0 -
Falkirk wheel?...and less fashionable Glasgow perhaps? (most green space of any city in Europe?), Art Galleries (free), Transport museum (also free and directly across the road from AG), Glasgow University....for Architecture nearby...and again free! Botanical Gardens (close by and yet again free)!0

Cheers Goldspanner - Rosslyn is great. Probably a heck of a lot busier now than when I went years ago.
Once went to a place where you could see Goat's Fell on Arran & Rosslyn - the clyde & forth - Gowanbank I think it's called - That has Templar stuff - might revisit that.mmmmmmmmmmmm Got me thinking now.
I'll give the air museum a miss - although OH would love it.0 -
Cheers Gordikin,
Yeh - Glasgow is great. I love the museum of modern art, the people's palace. I like Glasgow - The Burrell Collection. Will think about doing a bit of stuff there as there's a lot to see - free, which is great.
I have been to the wheel - it's amazing, but again OH loves these boy things much more - we'd be there for hours!
Cheers - loads of great suggestions from you both - thanks.0 -

we were in edinburgh a few weeks ago, on the way to the castle we stumbled across greyfriars bobby's grave, the graveyard was very interesting. steeped in history, my eleven year old was fascinated as were we. well worth a visit0

Have passed Little Sparta and it is not that near Edinburgh. Lanark or Biggar would be nearer.0

Go see something at the Fringe or International festival, there's a huge array of choice and some bargains to be had.0

Hi Gordikin - I forgot about the festival - That may offend some!
We will probably have to stay somewhere else - outside the city, or nearer the West Coast.
These are all great suggestions everyone.
Little Sparta is a must see for us & we can try & stay nearer there that day.
I had a look see at the festival 7 fringe programme on line. Seems over whelming selection of must sees there & at the fringe. There is so much that I glanced at that looks wonderful - tempting to do too much & run around like a headless chicken. Not used to all this culture!
Probably need a holiday when I get back, but it will be interesting. I think we'll play it by ear & see what we can cram in when we land there.
The Holyrood Palace & Greyfriars Bobby sound great too - so much to see & do!
Many thanks to you all. We could do with a fortnight rather than a few days, but will try & get a few of these suggestions in.
Cheers.0
