What about the ever popular.
'Can you hang on a minute' and put the phone down when the wee whaa noise starts go and stick it back on the reciever.
I tend to just hang up straight away.
Most cold callers have a second of delay before they connect so my normal rule of thumb is if you say 'hello' not get response and hear silence at the other end while they're still connecting just hang up.
Only annoyed the OH once, who wanted to know why I hung up on her

A friend of mine tells cold callers they live in a council property so are unable to make any alterations:wave: Kate :hello:0 -
The trouble with that line is that the cold caller may get the idea that they could call back later and expect to find the owner at home. ie this response says that this call is a waste of time, but this number [which can afford open ended baby sitting] might be a good prospect. You need a line which says it is a total waste of time to call this number.I'm on the TPS but people still keep calling and I have no way of finding out who they are and get the phone put down on me if I ask who they are.
So ...at the moment, I'm swinging between two standard lines:
I tell them I'm only the babysitter. I don't know when Mr and Mrs Steel, who work long antisocial hours, will be back - I'm just here and paid until they arrive back from work whenever that is. I'm not a family member. I usually get the phone put down on me mid-sentence by this time.

my elderly dad, got so fed up with them all.. he invited every double glazing firm round all at the same time. then the next night he invited every kitchen company round , the next night he invited every other muppet who wanted to sell him somthing.
He lived in a high rised block of flats which was council.. he switched off his phone and doorbell and let them all knock at the door at the same time ..
He got a phone call from most of them saying sorry we missed you he said he wasnt sorry as he was in but wasnt interested as as they wouldnt listen let them all waste there time.. .. They stopped calling after that lolThose we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
Our thoughts are ever with you,Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly,
Are thinking of you today.0 -
I don't get any on my home number- I changed it previously and only my family have it
I give a VOIP number out or my business number. That way I can filter who calls me
All the (non home number) calls divert to my mobile, and I have call recording, and call filtering active. The call filtering is excellent as they don't actually get through.
For fun (if they use a different number) I smoetimes keep repeating 'hello' in different voices. Gives a laugh to all and sudry as they hear it on loud speaker.
I will not swear or blow a whistle down the phone as the callers are only doing a job.baldly going on...0 -
Kitchen Direct are still at it. My mother who lives on her own in an retirement apartment was called three times in one day by Kitchens Direct who have told her that she has won a kitchen renovation worth £1000. Of course she never entered any competition, its obvious that its a sales ploy. She tried to tell them that she didn't want it but they weren't taking no for an answer from an ageing frail person. They even got as far as arranging for the salesman to come around and measure up, but fortunately my mom managed to put him off as she wasn't feeling well on the day. All this happened without my knowledge and when she told me I was furious at this underhand sales tactic. My mum didn't have a contact number for them so I couldn't contact them.
One point about the TPS. My mum is registered for this and so am I. Its easy for companies to get around this, they simply don't call and try and sell you something, they just say "we're carrying out a survey..." or as in this case "you've won a prize...". When I've tackled them as to why they're calling dispite my registration with the TPS they just say "but we're not trying to sell you anything, we're just carrying out a survey about kitchens... or whatever". Oh no of course you're not!0
