Orange staff photocopying and keeping credit card information.

I recently visited an Orange shop and signed up for a new mobile phone.
Details were given for the credit check regarding D.O.B. how long I have lived at my house, accommodation type, etc etc.
I passed.
Then I was asked for my ID, so I provided photo id and driving license which of course has my signature.
This is not good enough for Orange.
I was then asked for my Credit Card which the assistant took away, and photocopied front and back, along with the three digit number. He also photocopied my photo ID/Driving license.
According to Orange head office this is their standard procedure and the staff are told to do this.
WHY?
And what is happening to our information?
How secure is it?
The staff in store told me the photocopy of both my mastercard and my photo ID and driving licence would be kept on file upstairs, but for what purpose?
Already I had been asked by the staff what my mastercard credit limit was, and how much I had already spent (even though I was well within my credit limit) and they have already got the information required as to whether we are who we say we are from the credit check.
I have no objection to showing my mastercard to confirm my signature, but I am not happy about my card details being photocopied.
Neither were Mastercard when I told them. They cancelled straight away.
The fraud dept of the police also told me that No-one has any rights whatsoever to take photocopies of my mastercard So I would like to know how many other people have been treated this way under company policy?
As for the 'contract' this is no more than a customer information form not in my view any form of contract. It doesn't even say how much I am to pay every month!
I'm still fighting Orange for my clear terms and conditions of contract, which again according to Orange are in the booklet "Twelve Lovely things from Orange" that accompanies the phone in the box.
But you only get that when you get the phone in your possession....and that is after you have signed up.
An Orange representative told me this morning that They don't "Actively hand them out" because their are "so many terms and conditions"
So as far as I'm concerned, there are quite a few issues with Orange which need clarifying.
Can anyone advise me further?
