“People will struggle to recover from this disaster. Not only have many lost members of their families, but poor people have the fewest assets to fall back on and fewer opportunities to earn money.
“The aid agencies will provide humanitarian aid to the poorest people affected by the tsunamis over the months and years to come.
“But such is the scale of this disaster that they need urgent help to scale up their work,” he said.
The charities will also use the money to give longer term support to people whose lives and livelihoods have been destroyed by the effects of the earthquake under the Indian Ocean.
The committee is providing 3,000 lines (telephone number 087 0606 0900) for people to give donations and will be launching a television appeal later in the week.
Oxfam is asking for £3 million from the general public to help victims of the catastrophe and has called on the international community to support the UN in leading the aid response.

USA will give only £15million to this tsunami diasater, but they are spending around £1billion per week in Iraq- defending freedom (??) for the last 19 months and getting over 100,000 people killed(more than this disaster). One week expenditure in Iraq would go a very long way in helping all those millions of poor /homeless peple.
How about all the MSE members (stoozers) in addition to making any donation, sending an email each to the Whitehouse reminding President Bush of the above facts!!Regards

I very nearly posted something similar to this a couple of days ago - then thought better of it.
Having seen the posts from other users about stoozing and how happy they are, I would predict that 99.5% will keep their money where it is.
I know some will give and I thank them for that.
I hope to those that don't that you can sleep well at night in your nice warm bed with your family.
Something thousands of people have now lost through no fault of their own.0 -

How dare you be so presumptious about whether Stoozers will or won't give to the appeal. For the record, I give to 4 different charities by direct debit/standing order each and every month .... not that that is any of your business.
I find you presumption offensive.

daveboy?
You should understand that giving to charity is a very personal thing and the majority of people that do very rarely say they do.
I'd rather give to charities that care for children rather than animals for instance, but I don't think you should try to give people who "stooze" a guilt complex, on your presumption that the majority won't give.
Have you posted the same in other sections of the forum, like the Gamblers section for example?
It's not up to you to take the moral high ground with people in this way.
Let's just give what we can when we can and not pick on a section of the forum like this when we all should be trying to do something at such a bad time.
Apologies to other members for my 'out of character' rant.0 -

Everyone's situation is different. We don't give to charity the conventional way. The reason - my husband is African. Thirteen nieces and nephews in our family have died from Aids in the last 5 years. There are children with one parent and in two cases no parents. We have set up a small agricultural business to help family members to help themselves, grinding maize, buying pigs, a bicycle for ease of transport etc. The list is somewhat endless and the needs are always greater. We do our bit, it's not enough.
Don't presume us "stoozers" are a stingy lot!!0 -
I'm sure those that can give will give, as posted above, its an individual choice, I think were getting side tracked a little .....0
-
Back on a money tips - make sure you give the money as Gift Aid so that the charity also receives the tax you originally paid on it too. Very simple to do, your chosen charity will tell you all about it.0

Can't be having this slipping off the first page now can I.
I have used this site for a long time, and in relation to my original post, used knowledge that I have built up over that time.
Just take a look in the telephone bills section of MSE. People complaining about how the Tsunami appeal phone number is an 0870 number (under 'say no to 0870').
I did say some people will give, there are decent people out there. I didn't tar everyone with the same brush.
But there are those "I'm alright thanks" people who can't be bothered to make the effort to donate. Those that 'stooze' have no doubt made quite a bit of money out of doing so.
In a way I hope that this disaster makes people realise how greedy they are. You may have played credit card companies at their own game - but people on the other side of the world have nothing, and that's if they were lucky to survive.
Finally, I don't see why I should have to take the line others want me to. If I offend then tough. It's not illegal.0 -
The death toll is horrific 150,000+ ???
Everybody call the number at least once and donate a little, £5, £10, £15, £20, £50 .... all makes a difference.
Our existance on this planet is very fragile, here today... gone tomorrow............
So donate a drop from your savings / earnings ocean.
With global warming looming cos of our consumption binge, these sort of disasters are likely to become more common (obviously the current disaster is not global warming related).
You never know who will be the refugees of tommorrow.... Maybe it could be you ?
It's at times like this, that we realise how lucky we really are.0
