How to make a sofa-bed more comfortable?

I just moved to a place and we have a sofabed instead of a bed. It's a Ikea £300 one.

Is there anything I can do to make it slightly better? mattress pad? foam mattress protector? any other ideas? I know magic can't be done to make it nice and thick ... but I would appreciate at least a small improvement ...

In what way do you find it uncomfortable? Is it too firm, too soft, lumpy, etc?

We had this problem with our futon mattress. We bought a really thick mattress topper and it has made the world of difference. We got this one from The White Company: http://www.thewhitecompany.com/productdetails.aspx?id=1000798&itemno=LUXDUCKDOWNFM-MASTER but you can probably find others.

My sister has a good quality sofa bed, but found it uncomfortable to sleep on for more than the odd occasion, especially as she gives up her bedroom when she has guests. She invested in a memory foam topper & say's it has made all the difference & she sleeps really well on it now.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I will have a look for a memory foam mattress topper if you say it's good...
    grrrr... £70 for a mattress topper it's a little expensive ...

I think it's too firm and thin, I wake up with a back pain... :(

In that case get your self down your local market, and buy a 2" sheet of reflex foam. This will be far cheaper than memory foam. You won't get a good quality memory foam topper for £70 anyway.

You shouldn't have to pay anywhere near £70 by shopping around carefully. Have a look on Ebay. I bought a 4ft memory foam topper, described as a second as it was supposed to have some fluff adhering to it. When it arrived I could see no fluff & it looked in perfect conditon to me. I bought a 7cm 55kg, which is comfortable with good support. The seller's id is beddybuys4u, so check them out.

If you want to try out a market place for foam then if you are in SE London, East street market in Walworth, SE1 has a foam store about half way down.

Also, you could always check out your local paper/Thompson directory for any local places that sell foam & cut it to size.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

That would depend what part of London you live in?

    NW London,
I understand that quality costs ... but can't afford £100 on this...

interesting idea with the old duvet ... I could buy 2-3 single duvets and sew them togheter, and put some elastic bands over the corners like the mattress pads have...

This week-end I have to solve it somehow... or I will sleep on the floor this year as it may be more comfortable...
