Sim only contract - Would like upgrade

Hello Everyone,
I am currently have a sim only contract with Vodafone (Vodafone passport) at £15.00 a month where I get 300 mins and unlimited texts. The contract with them means that if I want to cancel I can write to them and it will be cancelled in 30 days. I would like to upgrade my phone and change my mobile number, however when I contacted Vodafone and told them this they said I would have to go on a contract.
I do not want to be tied into a contract for 12 or 24 months as they make too much money out of you that way!
I do not have a landline as I am a lodger and I rent a room in a house, I use my phone regulary but not to excessive amounts.
I was orginally on PAYG and would top up the phone by going online. Problem is I got sick of this as my internet connection at the house is 'awful' and yes I have complained to the landlord 3 times about it! I cannot top up on the internet at work as I work for the MOD I do not have access to this. Also where I work and live the Vodafone signal is very good so I dont want to change providers.
All I want is a new phone, new number and not have any bother with contracts and silly texts messages from Vodafone trying to get me to shell out more money to there expanding empire!
Any advice please??

How about cancel your exisiting sim only contract, take a new one out (or even just ask them to change the number on your exisiting one) and buy a new phone on Voda PAYG to use.0

A lot of that money goes to pay for the 'free' upgrade phone you get. You aren't going to get a new phone without a contract.0 -
If its any help I spoke to vodafone on friday and was offered on 12 month sim only package: 1200 mins, unlimited texts & unlimited L/L calls for £19.57 p/m.ANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.0

Sim only deals are definitely cheaper than getting a new phone/contract. Most are 30 day too so are easy to cancel plus you can keep your existing phone number.0

Buy a sim free and get a new payg sim ?
As above, 'free' phones aren't really free you pay for them with the monthly cost of the contract. No contract, no 'free' phone...0 -
Do what I'm planning to do: buy a nice phone independent of your network. No crap software included, not tied in for decades, can switch networks at will, and still get good "sim only" line rental deals.
Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Unfortunately as the others have already mentioned you won't be able to get a new top of the range handset on a SIM Only style contract. Your best bet would be to buy a SIM free handset and continue using your SIM only, or shop around for a better SIM Only tariff.
Hope that helps,
