OP may be able to get an intensive course? A friend of mine did one of these and passed in a couple of weeks. But that's always assuming s/he passed first time...0

Hi All
I have been in contact with an employer for several weeks and he has told me that if i obtain a full driving licence he would employ me.
Being on job seekers allowance for over 12 months now and am 20yrs old i have no means of funding this on my own.
Do you have a conditional offer of a job with this employer?
Why don't they simply offer the job to an existing experienced driver - there are lots of them out there jobseeking.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
There is no way they will use the ESF or ADF funds to pay for someone to have driving lessons. Can you imagine the thousands of people who will also say the same as you if this happens ? A lot of things like this are simply rumours.0

How do you know theres no way unless you actually ask? See, an advisor told me there was no way I'd get any help with travel costs until I was paid for the first time, I went back in and spoke to a guy who got it all sorted for me and now I can afford to attend work for the first month. He said it's there 'to help people get back into work and overcome the barriers that happen with new employment'. So he said it's for things like, clothes, tools, travel costs etc...it can literally be for anything. If someone walked in and had a letter from an employer saying we will employ this person on the basis they pass their driving test, why couldn't it come from that? I doubt thousands of people would get a job offer under those circumstances. Of course, I'd base it on a intensive course or a few lessons if a person is near completion of lessons. Or even subsidising half.
You can only ask....and they can only say no at the end of the day.0 -
Even IF they did give you driving lessons,
How are you going to afford a car???This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

There is a difference between travel costs and giving you money to buy driving lessons. The funds are there for things like travel costs NOT to pay £500+ a time for driving lessons and they were told NEVER TO DO THIS.0

Under many circumstances a driving license does help people get a job! Many jobs require someone to be able to drive - many employers specify the requirement for someone to be able to drive, even if the job itself does not involve driving and the employee could get to work in a Taxi (at great expense). I conclude from that that most employers are stupid, but that's their requirement and they get to specify the requirements.0

You have to make a valid case to get money out of the advisor discretionary fund. I managed to get £520 out of them at my local jobcentre because I wanted to get a professional qualification via a homelearning course - I was told to submit a business plan so I submitted two - one showing what was likely to happen if I didnt do the course and one showing what would happen if they paid for the course. I was told afterwards that they had never seen such a professional plea and I was awarded the money but I wasnt allowed money for clothes, travel or anything else because I had received more than my allowance.
I doubt it very much that they will pay for driving lessons - if the employer has a job that involves driving and you are the best person, why isnt the employer providing the lessons?Surely, the lessons would be classed as on-the-job training?
