Can i obtain a driving licence via job cente plus

Hi All
I have been in contact with an employer for several weeks and he has told me that if i obtain a full driving licence he would employ me.

Being on job seekers allowance for over 12 months now and am 20yrs old i have no means of funding this on my own.

I have been advised that the Job centre Plus may be able to help.

I would be prepared to repay any funding required after i start work.

CAN ANYBODY HELP!!!!!

Many thanks
David

You have not got a chance of getting driving lessons and before you say it foreign workers do not get this either.Have you tried warehouse work, bar work, cleaning work or work in fast food places ?
  • Job Centre Plus aren't there to help you get a job, they're there to get you off JSA.

So, no, they will not help you get a drivers licence which can cost over £1000. Sorry.

I'm certain I have read on here that some people have had help with costs for driving lessons from the job centre. I'm certain because I remember thinking I wish I had someone to pay for my driving lessons

You can only ask. Next time you go to sign on, say you've been offered a job with the proviso that you have a driving license which you don't have and see what they say. If they say "oh that's a shame keep looking" then you've lost nothing, if they say "oh well actually we are able to offer some financial assistance, blah blah" then you're in luck.

They're one and the same thing. Getting a job gets you off the JSA. It's in their interests to, for example, give you money for a suit for an interview.

I have enquired about this more than once and the answer was no. Instead I was offered a basic literacy and numeracy course, as I pointed out if I can spell those words and know what they mean that is of no use to me.
  • There used to be something in place where local authorities provided driving lessons subsidised for young jobseekers or mopeds

I think this was outlined in 03 or 04 probably not still valid but worth checking I think it was called wheels to work if there was no other suitable form of transport available and you had offer of work.

Some local gov also help towards the cost of pass plus lessons. I guess it depends on you Background and what local gov initiatives are available.

Some driving instructors might offer discount if they are stuggling for customers, also worth asking

You could ask family and friends to help by purchasing vouchers with a guarantee that you will pay them back when you get the job you have been promised or ask for special occassion gifts to be vouchers for lessons.
My posts are my own personal opinion . I would always recommend seeking professional advice.

I know this is a bit off topic but my partner's in law is only 17 and as part of her salary package for the council she has been offered driving lessons. She currently works as a PA for the centre manager and he requires her to be mobile so included this in her salary package, is this normal for a role which is funded by the tax payer?
  • I dont think it matters if it is in the public or private sector. they think she is the right person for the job so they are willing to do whats needed to keep her. she should be grateful for the lessons and go for it as ive spent £600 in the last few months getting my licence and prior to that had spent another £500 so its not cheap.

  • If you have a definite job offer, you may be able to access funding via the ESF (European Social Fund, I believe it stands for) for driving lessons. Talk to JobcentrePlus about your local provider, as they are the ones who are likely to run this. If they say no, I would still check with the provider directly as JCP are not always aware of everything that is on offer. Good luck!

Have you tried asking someone about the Advisor Discretionary Fund? As I was speaking to a JCP advisor myself about travelling costs to a new job, and he said theres £300 available to help people overcome the barriers to get people back into work. So maybe it could come from that, if you have a definite job offer.

Do you really think that the employer will hold the position open for the time (months/ years) it takes you to learn to drive?
    Gone ... or have I?
