Intelligent Finance - Proof of Identity

Hi all just a quick question for those of you who have opened an ISA with IF recently - I applied online a few weeks ago and recieved a letter in the mail asking me to sign and send them proof of my identity. While reading what they accept as proof of identity I noticed this: "All documents must be original or certified as being a true copy. Where copy documents are provided these must be certified as true copies by a solicitor...accountant... or financial advisor"
I am not comfortable sending away my drivers licence or passport just to open an account - does this mean if I want to send a photocopy I need to get one of the above to stay its's real? I don't know any of these types of people so what would be the best way to go about it?
I applied for a new savings account with A&L just before this ISA and they were content with a photocopy so I find this rather odd! If anyone has an answer it would be greatly appreciated!

Go into your local Halifax/BOS account with your passport, and they will verify it for you. Thats what i did.
IF refused my solicitor verified copy anyway! Was annoyed about that, as they followed the rules to a "t" according to what was written by IF.Credit Card 6.9% - £0/£2800
Graduate OD 19.9% - [STRIKE]£1000[/STRIKE] Paid off Sept 11
Sealed Pot Challenger #598
Pay off as much as you can 2012 #690 -
The other awkward thing with IF was proof of address for my wife - we couldn't find anything like original utility bills, phone bills etc as we use paperless/online, we don't get council benefits(!!) and they won't accept P60s or Notice of Coding from the tax man (why ???)
In the end we managed to find an ISA statement from one of their rivals to send as proof of residence.
We actually risked sending her old style driving licence to them - hope we don't regret it!!0 -
My wife took her passport to our local halifax branch (we don't bank there) and got them to do a certified copy of it which we sent to IF.0
