Thanks for the help everyone. Have applied for the Santander Zero CC so hopefully will hear about it in a week or two. Until then I'm gonna look into the pre-paid cards. It is a holiday - never actually had one in another country that's why I'm so clueless. Should be interesting though.

There's something in the back of my mind that a lot of Japanese purchases are done using cash - but it still doesn't alter the advice that a CC is a useful backup. Just remember to tell the company that you are going abroad and that you have the overseas contact number for when they forget you are abroad and block your card - same applies to the debit card0

One thing I would also advise is to check with your CC provider prior to your departure to ensure that your credit limit will not be reduced or indeed your card account closed.
I was recently in the Far East and Nationwide CC decided in their wisdom (without any justification I might add) to reduce my credit limit WITHOUT NOTIFICATION,
Hi .... are you sure they reduced your cc limit .... maybe they thought it was suspicious activity & blocked the account?
