Peter Mandelson took over running the country yesterday - via his Blackberry from Corfu.
The Business Secretary replaced Harriet Harman who was standing in for Gordon Brown while the PM is on holiday.
Downing Street suggested the peer would return to Britain from Greece to mind the shop.
But sources later revealed he is not expected at his desk until Monday afternoon.
A Number 10 insider said he was "remotely" in charge by Blackberry and mobile phone.
He added: "Modern technology means he can stand in while the Prime Minister takes a break. You don't need to do day-to-day decisions over the weekend."
But Tory chairman Eric Pickles said: "You know the country is in a shambolic state when we have an unelected official calling the shots from his holiday hideout."

Lib Dem Norman Baker added: "Labour can't even manage to leave one person in charge of the country who's actually in the country... but we're probably better off with them out."
Justice Secretary Jack Straw and Chancellor Alistair Darling will also take turns at the helm.
Downing Street stressed Mr Brown was still in charge overall.
But Lord Mandelson's spell in charge caps another remarkable comeback for the man dubbed the Prince of Darkness by colleagues.
Mr Brown recalled the EU Commissioner to serve as Business Secretary last October.
Since then he has saved the PM's skin by helping to scupper an attempt to oust him.
He was rewarded with the title First Secretary, effectively Deputy Prime Minister, and has been tipped to take over as leader.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

A story about absolutely nothing. Who cares if he's in Corfu over the weekend and contactable by blackberry? On every other weekend MPs are presumably at home, contactable by blackberry as well. What's the difference?

Oh wait, the difference is that this sounds a good story in the media.

Isn't he staying with some nouveau riche wealthy banker friend, and again probably consorting with the Russian former communist 'elite'? Nice and impartial, then, our glorious leader Mandelslime.

Labour's Civil Contingencies Act of 2004 of course allows for any one of literally hundreds of pip-squeak pen-pushers to declare an 'emergency', suspend Parliament, suspend habeas corpus, take over the BBC and all the utility companuies and allows the Police to shoot anyone who is cheeky.

NB If Mandy just has the Blackberry, who has the briefcase with our ballistic missile firing codes?

Or did Mandy leave it behind as it would exceed the cabin allowance on his RyanAir flight?

So, an unelected politician is standing in for an unelected PM. You've gotta love democracy.

So, our unelected, incompetent PM is on holiday.
And in his place we've had the utterly useless Harman woman, a clear example of someone who has been promoted way above her abilities, running the show.
And now, the unelected several times disgraced Many bloke has taken over.
We are imposing democracy on the world, and making a mockery of it at home.

Mandelson is a crook. A disgraced politician who is on his third comeback. Not voted in, but given a Lordship. How in hell does this guy get to be in charge of anything?

Really it's a kick in the teeth to anyone who has some decency - look kids this is what you can be if you cheat and abuse the system, and have friends in high places.

Every now and then I jump on my high horse and say something stinks - and this is one of those times.
