Thanks for all the good wishes, it has been really appreciated - I was worried sick yesterday - but fingers crossed for Badger coming home tomorrow. They need to know everything is working first, so I am really hoping she has a good old poop so that the vets know they put everything back on the right order and there are no kinks in the tubing!

So - please send 'do a poop for us' thoughts in Badgers direction!

.. I worked out that as she ate a pound of jam, and weighs about 28lbs herself, that is the equivalent of an average person eating over 2 stones of jam, in one sitting.... complete with embedded glass shards - you have to hand it to her for effort and perseverance!

  • yes, she will eat anything - just a note for anyone with a dog ..

When you google 'dog swallowed glass' there are literally hundreds of websites telling people to feed their dogs cotton wool balls dipped in cream in this situation, the idea being that the glass gets wrapped up in the cotton wool and passed through - however, I do not think there is any guarantee that will happen, and the cotton wool itself is a potential culprit for causing an obstruction, adding to the dog's difficulties.

I was told by the vet that as they could still see the shard of glass in her stomach, they had a better chance of finding it than they would if it passed into the intestines, so the only thing to do if you find yourself in this situation is get your dog to the vets ASAP!! Also because she was still bright and well, she had a better chance than if she was already suffering from a bleed and internal injuries.

So, if this happens, feed your dog nothing, you do not want the glass to get pushed along the GI tract, just get it to the vet, before the glass causes internal perforations or lacerations, when the vet could be operating on a dog that is seriously compromised already.

Phew! glad to hear that Badger is on the mend, naughty little monkey! She looks adorable icon7.gif

Apricot Jam? If you had said a jar of hotdogs or something, but apricot Jam? I wonder if she still thinks it is delicious after all of this.

Hugs to you FC, you must have been beside yourself with worry.

Good cleansing poop thoughts coming Badgers way :D
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

Hope Badger gets well soon. I can empathise with the "waiting for a poop" phase and the worry you're going through as my cocker spaniel pup had a similar op last month - he swallowed a washing-up sponge in one gulp when we were on holiday (another of those dogs that will eat anything). We drove straight back home so our vet could remove it: the vet found the sponge in the stomach but also ended up having to cut into the intestine as it turned out that there were various other bits of rubbish (twigs, etc) in there. Barney was hospitalised for five days and we were worried sick about leakage / peritonitis developping, but he was fine and is now back to his old self, apart from a dodgy haircut on his tummy where they had to shave him. Our insurance company are going to be delighted when they receive the claim (£1450 vet bill, plus holiday cancellation £700).

Cutting into the stomach is not as risky as cutting into the intestine: fingers crossed Badger will be fine. Our vet told us that the risk period for any infection occuring is between 2-5 days after the surgery, so (if he comes home before this) you may want to get a digital thermometer from Boots and check his temperature as the quicker you can spot any infection the easier it will be to deal with. Barney was sent home with 2 types of anti-biotic, an anti-inflammatory, a pro-biotic and special food. He also wasn't allowed upstairs - which is where he usually sleeps, so I ended up sleeping downstairs with him for two weeks. It was really hard to keep him quiet and calm - we ended up re-erecting his puppy pen to restrict him from running around.
