the operator doesnt fling the shopping at you at 100mph,
the operator is told to to scan X aount of items per minute, they cant achieve they're target if they have to wait for you to finish emptying your basket,

Has the same result, whatever the reason. A pile of shopping and nowhere to pack. Bring on the self serve tills - I don't have targets to meet;)

Tbh, OP, this sounds like a typical Aberdeen store - they won't spend the money to get the staff on that they actually need. :)

And, btw, I'm originally from Aberdeen, but I hate the place, so I left it as soon as I could.

it annoys me more when you do a big shop and the til operator doesnt help you pack and the pile of shopping just gets bigger tut tut

In this situation, I would pay and then start to pack my stuff nice and slowly (gotta make sure nothing gets squashed).

If you have a large trolley load, after about five mins, the people waiting behind should be tapping their feet and tutting away. You can then tell them to thank the till opperator for (not) helping to pack.

I used to work in Sainsbury's and we were told to ALWAYS offer to help with the packing, never let it pile up once scanned and never start with the next customer while the previous one was still packing.

I don't usually like the self-scan checkouts because they usually break down on me, or I get "unexpected item in bagging area" or please place the item in the bagging area" etc.

Today though I had picked up some Pork with stuffing from the Deli counter which should have been £1.21, it wouldn't recognise the item, so the assistant tried putting the code and overriding the price etc and twice it went through as £12.16 and once at £10.12 . The chap told me to carry on scanning and he took the item over to CS, about a minute later he said "don't worry about it you can have it for free" and popped it in my bag. :rotfl:Then he had to cancel the "unexpected item in bagging area" message.

I know this thread is about Tesco, but this happened at Asda.

That reminds me, our local Tesco had all 5 check-outs open the other day:eek::j(first time since the store opened I have seen them all open) - only after some guy complained to the manager about only 1 check-out being open and a queue going round the shop... Apparently there was a guy shop lifting, so most of the staff were huddled in the back office watching the cctv:eek:. Since then, it has been the average of 2 check-outs open at any one time. Oh well.

The policy has changed now, each customer has to be asked if they have their own bags and an appropriate offer of help. So if they have a large trolley then offer help with there packing, if they have 3 items just ask them if they need a bag. Any customer who wants help with packing (however many items) only has to ask and we will be happy to do it. The not serving the next customer until the current one had finished still applies though.

I find it hard when customers who have a trolley full of stuff and don't want help with packing. Our belts are really tiny because we are a really old store that hasn't had a referb. So in order to clear more space on the belt you have to let them pile up at the other end. Sometimes you end up with the situation of having too much at both ends.

tbh, usually the staff are pleasent but the lady that served me on that occaision (sp?) had a complete face on and even my o/h who never comments on these things mentioned when we got that she had attitude.

i very nearly complained, i dont call talking to the operator behind you about the weekend and ignoring your customer until you want the money 'customer service'.
