I visited the South Aberdeen store this morning and for the 4th time in the last 6 weeks they do not have any operators on the "conveyor" belt checkouts. They only have open the self serve and the two "basket" checkouts.
Now, when you have a trolley full of groceries, using either of these is not ideal. I don't like their self service tills as they never work (yes I have read the thread re these as well) so I end up having to go to the "basket" tills, load all my groceries in the little square, wait well the operator scans it and moves it to continue unloading. By the time I have finished unloading, my goods are piled high awaiting me to put them in bags, thus delaying the queue. :silenced:
Two weeks ago when the same thing happended, two customers were complaining about the same thing. Today I couldn't beleive they still didn't have any conveyor belt tills open so I spoke to the girl who looked like she was in charge and politely asked her why they never have conveyor belt tills open on a Saturday morning. She said they do not have enough staff so I asked her why can you not move one of the basket till operators to benefit customers with trolleys. She did not answer me.
Needless to say I have just fired off a complaint email to Tesco.

i hate "self service " tills with a passion ! my local co op changed to a tesco and at 1st all checkouts were manned , the last time i went in [had a trolly full] i had to ask for a checkout to open was told to use the self service till, basically i told them there were 2 options a member of staff [there were approx 6 straightening shelves] came to a till or they could spend the next 15 mins putting my goods back on the shelf ! i was told that i would "have" to use them in the future as the plan is to get rid of proper checkouts but i for one will vote with my feet .This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I hate the basket tills more, unless you have only 1 item. Since the chip and pin scanners have been installed there is effectively no more than a few square centimetres to pile the scanned shopping that they hurl through at 100mph before you have even emptied your basket. Thus there is nowhere to put your bag to pack and handbag ends up on the floor! By now, there is a growing queue and foot-tapping checkout operator.
Much prefer the self-serve, you can scan/pack at your pace and not so many people use them anyway. Plus you can make sure you add your green points:D0 -

the operator doesnt fling the shopping at you at 100mph,
the operator is told to to scan X aount of items per minute, they cant achieve they're target if they have to wait for you to finish emptying your basket,0 -
Can't stand the self serve - that bl**dy voice that keeps saying "put the item in the bagging area" does my head in, particularly when it is something light AND I ALREADY HAVE!!!
Our local store is the size of an aircraft hanger (superstore) yet the belt checkouts are still tiny, though to be fair the staff can scan fast but they rarely overload my end but keep pace with my packing speed. If they didn't then I'd tell them to get someone to help me pack or tell them not to scan any more items until I caught up.
No doubt I will start a row but if I have a lot of shopping and feeling a bit tired, I go on the checkout of a male, haven't found one yet that can go at the speed of the middle aged women.......................0 -
I like the self service ones, now that I've mastered the right force to plonk things in the bagging area to get them to recognise it's gone in.
Do feel sorry for the staff, though, because soon there won't be any doing the checkout. That being said, I can never understand what half of them say to me anyway. I'm sure the last guy to serve me at tesco didn't even speak english, just grunted and pointed at various things when (i assume) he wanted me to pay.0 -
it annoys me more when you do a big shop and the til operator doesnt help you pack and the pile of shopping just gets bigger tut tut0
