    Hello,

I am looking at getting some private health insurance. My employer doesn't offer a scheme.

Ideally I want reasonably comprehensive cover, but also one which isn't going to cane me with a much higher premium each year on renewal.

Any ideas where is best to start?

There's no easy answer to this. The right policy depends entirely on your circumstances, requirements and budget.

    My three tips:

    1. Use a broker
    2. Don't use a price comparison website
    3. Don't be seduced by high no-claims discounts

You can search for a specialist health insurance broker at amii.org.uk
  • Hi everyone, I just thought I would offer up this comparison website which I found really useful when I was renewing my health insurance policy. I managed to save quite a bit.

It is http://quoteboffin.co.uk/. Hope this helps,

    Cheers.

Patient choice has only a £15,000 limit on cancer drugs. These can cost around £50,000 or more for a years course. They are ok for the smaller things i've heard from fellow consultants, but people who are unaware of these limits and who are unlucky enough to get say cancer may be very disappointed to say the least if they come to claim for something like this.

National Friendly although limited to the benefits your chosen premium gets for you, plus your top up cover (see website above for further details). NF was a very good and very low cost option before it changed for new joiners in February 2010. However it now has had dental and optical removed from the plan (which was over and above most PMI policies) and you used to be able to get 50% of your unclaimed premiums back at any point (its now 25%). They also used to have fixed premiums for life and it is now fixed premiums for five years.

On the plus side you can now have a £20 top up which gets you £60,000 extra benefit on top of the benefits your premiums get for you, which i'd advise if you were to take this policy out.

This is then probably on a par or arguably slightly better than insurers AXA/AVIVA/Standard Life. Simply Health etc who either have a 12 month limit on cancer drugs or in the case of Simply health limit them to £50.000

Because of all these changes to NF and add to that it now can cost around the same as a comprehensive Bupa/Pruhealth/Exeter Friendly/The PHC policy who all cover cancer in full (no limits on cancer drugs and include palliative care as well). Why not look at an insurer that covers cancer in full ?

Thanks for that chihuahuabear. What an amazing coincidence that you work in telesales in Edinburgh and QuoteBoffin is a trading style of David and Co Consultants of 24 Great King Street, Edinburgh.

My claim has been refused on the grounds that it is pregnancy related, although the policy states that it DOES cover complications of pregnancy. I have an Incisional Hernia as a result of my c/section in Dec 09. An incisional hernia is not considered a complication of pregnancy... I am lodging an appeal, but am really disappointed tohave this cover only to be told the first time I have needed to claim that my condition is not covered even though, medically it requires major abdominal surgery. Grrrr - please check all exclusions, but then also read between the lines. It would seem that these companies will go all out to find a reason NOT to pay up! Personally, I think I'll take Martin's advice and stick to the NHS. These private plans should alleviate the strain on the NHS however, not make it worse!!!
