How to stop the dog pulling me!

Our 3 Springers all walk better off the lead than on - they seem to have an in-built aversion to them!!
We use slip leads and if they start to pull, hold the lead across your body i.e. end of the lead in the hand on the opposite side of your body to the dog, with your other hand further down the lead and keep the dog tight to you - whilst saying heel. I hope I've explained that OK!!! It works for us and reduces any strain on your arms from them pulling as you have 2 hands on the lead and no slack lead for them to pull on.
Springers do need to have a good run around though so it would be good to practice recall with her. If your voice isn't very strong then I suggest a whistle and start training in an enclosed area so she can't disappear.
Good luck, you'll get there with perseverance and Springers are the best dogs in the world (have to say that got 3 lying next to me snoring :rotfl:)0 -
Please don't let her run up to on lead Dogs, what if she got badly attacked? Mine'd attack her & it'd be you in the wrong for having a Dog off lead not under control! I'm saying this because I don't want your Dog hurt, or you in trouble for an out of control Dog or someone like me with an aggressive Dog to go through the stress of untrained Dogs running up & setting ours back in their training!0

Wow you must have your work cut out with 3 of them
We also use a slip lead, and your explanation made perfect sense - it also sounds easier on the arms
My ex did use a whistle with her, but i'm not sure if they have a command for recall - he taught her to stop, find (the dummy), and not sure if she returned to him with just the whistle but i'll take it out next time.
She must know i've been complaining about her, as yesterday she didn't run off to other dogs and came back to me, she's good for me sometimes (ok, rarely!)

TBH, most of the time 3 is no harder than one, just means there's less room on the settee/bed
I have arthritis and find that way of holding the lead much easier if they start to pull.
Usually the number of times you blow on the whistle means different commands so if she has already had some whistle training it might be worth blowing one and seeing what she does. Ours have 3 short whistles which means come back, one short whistle for look at me and I'll point in the direction I want you to go and one long whistle for stay. Much better than trying to shout at them on a windy day when they're half a field away with their head stuck in a bush!
If you can work on your recall you'll be able to safely let her off the lead (in an appropriate place) and then she can get the exercise she needs which will tire her out. Many people think that Springers are mad all the time but if they get the right amount and type of exercise then they are good as gold in the house. We take ours on holiday and stay in hotels with no problems, because we are out walking with them all day they just lie under the table in the bar in the evening and you wouldn't know they were there - apart from the snoring :rotfl:0 -
I love Springers, any pics? lol0

I've probably got about 5000 pictures
Unfortunately my laptop died last week and I'm just using a little netbook until my new laptop arrives and I can use my external hard drive to get all my photos back. I'm so glad I back up regularly! 0 -
I might sponser a Springer I think with Dogs Trust lol I just love them but couldn't provide the right sort've home for one right now!0

Yes! Your whistle commands are exactly the same as ex used, i know he uses the 3 short whistles for 'come' as he did it with his last springer, i just don't know if this one responded to it.
It doesn't bother me at all that she runs off to other dogs -very rarely is a dog aggressive for no reason, so i trust her to judge whether the dog will snap her or not, and if it does then she will hopefully learn for next time! However it's other owners that are the problem, some people get so tetchy when your dog runs to greet theirs, and i always call her back but sometimes the dogs run off and play. Lots of people are nice and will be glad of the company for their dog, but most are just arsey and give you evil glares when i'm calling my dog back and she's having too much fun to listen :rotfl:
Some owners make their dog heel throughout the whole walk but i prefer to let her run around and use her energy

I don't let her run to dogs on their lead, as i know if anything happened it would be my fault!
But if there's dogs running around same as her, i can't always stop them. But never to a dog on a lead. I always put her on her lead again wherever possible, when there's lots of people around, as she'll greet everyone - and i know most people do not appreciate the licks of a springer :rotfl:0 -
Love the photos, she's scrummy - I'd have 100 Springers if we had the space :eek:0
