I bought Delia's "Frugal Food" the first time it was published when I was a teenager:eek: Over the years I reckon it's sound common sense has saved me a fortune, although the book is now disintegrating
As my own cooking has progressed though I tend to take the recipes as just a rough guide. Also, I live miles from any shops so almost everything I cook is an adaptation as I refuse to go off shopping for the odd ingredient. Shame I never get around to writing them down though!
Hope you enjoy your new read. Glad it is not just me with the cookery (and gardening) books beside the bed!0 -
The 80s editions of Frugal Food are selling on Amazon for 1p each. Does anyone know how they compare to the more recent edition? Is there any reason to pay a whole extra £1.18 for the 1997 one? That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest. Henry David Thoreau0

Just checked my copy of Frugal Food - published 1976 and I think I must have bought it soon afterwards:eek: (student days) In fact I have two copies as my original is disintegrating too!0 -
I bought the MWL book last summer and waited eagerly for it to arrive - only to be very disappointed with it.
The preface is very good and has some thought provoking comments but the recipes themselves are not the most inspiring, especially as I don't eat wheat or sugar. I also bought The Paupers Cookbook and was given some Nigel Slater books for my birthday and I rate these two writers highly. Not only is a there a plethora of delicious and exciting recipes but both authors clearly love cooking, eating and writing about food. They have joined Nigella and Hugh FWS by my bed as nightime reading (I have a large collection of gastroporn!).
The chinese hand of pork recipe by Jocasta is delish - it formed part of a chinese feast for 10 people that cost less that £10 in total (excluding booze) and has become a family favourite.
As for MWL, I'm going to Ebay it as it's just taking up space on my very, very overcrowded shelves.Don't judge people on they way they look, the way they speak or what they're called because they can't help that.
Only judge people on what they say and what they do.0 -

My copy is a 1997 edition and is simply a reprint of the original 1976 edition. I don't think it has ever been updated. It is a very useful book.0 -
Hi There,
I know a few people on here have this cookbook - is it worth it? What kind of recipes does it have? Is it good for vegetarians?
Thanks in advance!0 -

These will help, also read the reviews on Amazon, both UK and .com. Bear in mind it is American and cup measures are used although there is a useful conversion chart. The recipes are very basic, not fancy at all but very adaptable. Lots of stuff suitable for veggies.0 -
Dang, I searched and nothing came up! Thanks Thriftlady - I was hoping you'd see this;)0

You inspired me to go and look out my copy of this book that I rescued from a CS bin when my eldest lad was just a baby (19 now). I'm so shocked to find that my copy is from 1976 because it looks much older with it's yellow pages and unstuck glue. It must have been well loved by its previous owner.
I'm going to spend the afternoon looking through it againStrange thing was, I must have sorted my books into some sort of order at some point because it was right next to another fav book from yesteryear called The Pennywise Cookbook. LOL my mum had this book when I was little and making beany pies was a huge treat for me. I don't think I'd thank you for them now but I did love them as a kid:o

Hi seraphina,
As the other thread is also on the front page of Old Style I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.
