Moggins, do you mean The New Pauper's Cookbook which was published in the 90s ? It is a white book with a cartoony drwaing on the front.

There is a newer edition called (again) The Pauper's Cookbook. This is like a cross between the original 70s edition and the 90s version. It has lots of offal recipes and cheap cuts of meat, plus vegetarian recipes and pasta recipes. It also has a new introduction. It's here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Paupers-Cookbook-Jocasta-Innes/dp/0711222401/sr=1-1/qid=1170317332/ref=sr_1_1/202-4560088-2422211?ie=UTF8&s=books

My review is there too (Getoka), note what I say about the index though;)
I recommend The Country Kitchen also by Jocasta Innes, especially if you want to make your own preserves, bread etc.

I now own the original 70s edition too, lucky find in a charity shop - love the chapter on 'programmed eating' just wish the quantities were for a family not a couple.

I've got this one too, but haven't cooked anything from it yet. Have you seen Crazy Water, Pickled Lemons also by Diana Henry ? Gorgeous writing and recipes from the Mediterranean and Mid East.
    I like Rose Prince's book too ;)

Ooh, yes, I've got Crazy Water, Pickled Lemons - haven't actually tried any of the recipes yet but it's a lovely book :)

The New English Kitchen is £4 on the Book People (https://www.thebookpeople.co.uk, put NEK into the search box) at the moment, I would definitely recommend this to you Gingernutmeg. It's a great, modern way of thinking about cooking and food. Basically, she talks a lot about getting the best quality, most ethical food you can, finding good suppliers etc, but then making it go as far as possible. This is the way I was brought up to think about food and I have to say I agree with most of what she says! Probably the best-known example is where she shows how a large organic chicken can make something like 18 meals.

So now there's at least one more cookbook I have to check out ;)

If only cookbooks were my only vice!

    ;)
  • I now have the money to buy the MWL cookbook and the Pauper's Cookbook. You'd think that would be easy enough, but like a few people upthread I'm still struggling to choose!

I was wondering if anyone has their spiral bound copy of the MWL cookbook to hand and could give me an ISBN number? I think it's 083619103X, which is about £3 dearer than the other paperback version on Amazon. I just want to make sure that's right before I shell out the extra dough!

As for the Pauper's Cookbook, I think I'll buy the one that's a cross between the 70s version and the 90s version (thanks for that tip!). I might try to buy the two other versions secondhand if I get a chance.
  • Also, has anyone tried Delia's Frugal Food:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Frugal-Food-Delia-Smith/dp/0340712945/ref=pd_luc_0210207112224010340712945/026-8644283-3035621

Amazon is trying to convince me to buy it, and the cover made me laugh in all its glorious eighties-ness.
  • The ISBN on my new spiral bound editon is 083619103x - hope this helps!

I managed to find a copy of the original paupers cookbook on ebay and I really like it. I haven't cooked anything from it yet but it's definitely going to be well used :)
  • Yes, exactly what I needed! I can't wait to get mine now. I'll be sitting by the door anxiously awaiting their arrival!

I just got Delia's frugal food via Amazon this morning. I think it was about £1.30 + that darned postage, but still under £5. Looking forward to reading it at bedtime!:)
