Help please! I've seen several mentions of this cookbook and thought I'd get myself one. I've checked on Amazon and there seem to be two editions, one from Sept 2000 and a revised edition Oct 2003. Call me daft but I don't know which to go for! The older one is dearer, does that mean it's got more in? If anyone can help I'll be very grateful. Thanks

Hi Churchmouse,
I've been looking at Amazon and you're right about the two editions.I have two copies of the 2000 edition.I can't work out what is different about the 2003 edition as there is no picture. It does seem to have more pages though.Maybe it has a new introduction?
I would get the 2000 one because that's the one I use and I can vouch for itI would also recommend the spiral bound version as it is really practical in the kitchen. This version is not available from Amazon UK anymore and when I bought my second copy ( for bedtime reading!) I had to order it from Amazon.com.
It really is an excellent book. The introduction is inspiring, all about consuming less of the world's resources so that others may simply live. The recipes are really easy and you can always rustle up something from your storecupboards from it.Get a set of US measuring cups to make life easier and you'll be away0 -
Thanks thriftlady, that was just the type of answer I wanted!! I will now try to get a spiral bound version of the 2000 edition. As luck would have it I bought the US measuring cups yesterday while shopping in Matalan! You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

Glad to help.By the way if there are any American terms that baffle you in the book there is a thread 'Those crazy Americans' started by Holsale (a genuine American person) where you can ask for translations.Or ask me,I'm pretty good at US cooking-speak now0

Quick update! Couldn't find the spiral-bound edition anywhere so ordered the £12 ish paperback version from Amazon. Arrived yesterday! It is spiral-bound!!!! What the Americans term a plastic comb. Anyway I had to have a quick look through and nearly 3 hours later managed to put it down! Couldn't do anything today as it was my old peoples lunchclub and that is very tiring, but tomorrow I'm cooking something from it come what may!!! Thanks to Thriftlady for putting me on the right track and stand by for loads of questions! You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

I'm excited for you Churchmouse :T I've just been reading my upstairs copy :rotfl: whilst dd was splashing in the bath.I do hope you love it as much as I do.
It is an unassuming little book to look at next to the Jamies,Nigels and Nigellas, yet it has been truly life-changing for me and has affected the way I think about and prepare food more than any other book.Apart from anything else the recipes are all really easy and work0 -
Has anyone any thoughts on the MWL cookbook. I'm thinking of buying it, but eat a low fat, low sugar, high fibre diet and don't want to waste my money if there are lots of recipes I cant use.0

What does MWL stand for?0

Its the More With Less Cook book that a lot of people seem to swear by for wholesome, cheap recipes.
But if it uses a lot of fat or sugar its no good for me0 -
Do you mean More With Less Cookbook by Doris Janzen Longacre ? If so there are threads about it here

If you do a search for cookbooks you will find more posts about it.
There are many high fibre recipes, lots of beans and lentils and breads with whole grains, also breakfast cereals. The sweet recipes are low in sugar. Fat content of the recipes vary, but they are very adaptable, and you'd easily be able to substitute spray oil for frying onions etc, or use oil rather than solid fats. I recommend it
I suggest you look on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com and read the many reviews.0 -
Thanks thriftylady, you've convinced me!
I've just ordered it!!
Look forward to trying some new ideas.:j :T :j :T0
