    The view of the FOS, just so that you are aware and for future reference ;) is that the bank have every right to pay the money into the account that has had the charges taken from it. Since the bank are paying it back as a gesture of goodwill and there is no liability then there is no legal reason for them to repay you by cheque. If they do pay by cheque the balance outstanding is still outstanding so it kinda pokes you in the eye UNLESS the account is already paid off and closed.
