Why is there so much pressure to go on expensive holidays?

I live alone and do alot of things alone, just not sure I'd be brave enough to go somewhere abroad completely alone.
I have travelled to places alone but have always met people I knew at the other side.
Maybe I'm being a bit of a chicken and should just get a guide book and a cheap flight? Just nervous, thats all.
I personally find it easier being abroad alone than I do in this country, anyone else agree? It's the "couples" that give me the eebie jeebies to be honest, haha!! Just wish I was one I suppose :0(
Dinkylou - you'll be fine!! Try it - its so much fun!!
I worked in Spain for a summer a few years back, and flew there on my own with no idea where to go/what to do etc - that gave me enough confidence to move to London & now I am travelling.
I do wonder if I am getting a bit selfish though. I am so looking forward to the whole adventure!!

There isn't, it's all in your imagination. Stop worrying about what other people think.

Me too. And both friendships just about survived (that probably says more about me than it does them, hehe!!).

Thanks Climbgirl, think I'll pop to the library tonight and pick up a few 'rough guide' books.
Think I am being a chicken about it.
Maybe we could have a DFW poll of where I should go on holiday!! Somewhere cheap, with lots to see, things to do (hopefully come diving) and fairly safe (ie not Beirut!!)0 -

That's the brilliant thing about doing it on your own - the confidence it will give you! I was so scared when I first tried it out, was scared about spending so much time with just myself for company to be honest! But when you find out you're more than capable of meeting hte challenge, it's an awesome feeling.
Whoever said earlier that people don't come back changed from holidays, I'd disagree with that. Maybe that's the 'holiday vs. travel' distinction, but I know I'm changed so much from having travelled a lot. Hopefully for the better0 -

Ha ha I was going to suggest a poll
I'd start off with somewhere in Europe, it's pretty easy to travel there in terms of language, familiarity etc. And if you choose a big city there'll be lots of do. If you like art/architecture I'd recommend Barcelona - there's lovely beaches close by too if you want some sun and swimming.
Oooo too many places to go!0 -
Oooh prague? LAtvia? Get yourself a cheapie ryan air, book into a youth hostel ( much better quality than youd think, and cheap  and off you go:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
One more thing before I totally take over your thread - if you travel alone, you can make the trip as cheap as you want. Get bread and cheese etc for lunch, avoid the expensive restaurants!
good luck, and PM me if you want to talk travel some more - it's one of my favourite subjects0 -
Climbgirl & ms_london - totally agree about travelling alone.
On the other hand, I do have a wonderful friend that is perfect for going on hols with - you can borrow him if you like, climbgirl, he'd like nothing better than mooching round Florence looking for art treasuresHe really wore me out last year in Rome cos he walks v. fast, and is an ancient history graduate with a "fluent" knowledge of Latin - who needs a guidebook, hey? :rotfl:
But in general I do prefer travelling alone (as does he). I find the only disadvantage is handling your own luggage on the journey (e.g. you have to drag your suitcase into the toilet cubicle with you at the station/airport, as there's no companion to stand outside and look after it).
Other than that, travelling alone ROCKSOperation Get in Shape

haha sounds brilliant, send him my way! I used to teach art history at uni so being able to visit all these works in person is my own private heavenI bore my friends to tears going on and on about this stuff, I've long since given up dragging them on my trips!
