Why is there so much pressure to go on expensive holidays?

I know this is a bit of a rant but I knew that you guys would understand.

At the moment, every person I know is either telling me about the wonderful holiday they've got planned or asking me where I'm going away this year.

And I'm not just talking a few weeks in Spain or Greece, but everyone I know is taking trips to Australia/Thailand/America etc etc.

Maybe I'm feeling it more as I really want a trip abroad but I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling pressured and down when someone talks about their great holiday plans.

Oh and I'm single so its not really as though I can take OH and find a cheap alternative. (friends all want expensive hols)

So as a fellow DFW, how do you stop yourself feeling down when people talk about hols or ask where you are going?

I have gone to very exotic places on my own, and spent less than £300, belize, venezuela, cuba etc by getting the flights and lodgings seperate. this year, we are holidaying in UK, in the family beach house in Dorset. Partly cos we are skint, but partly because we are concerned about flight emissions, and the impact on the environment of flying.

YOu could say you are going green and youd rather not pollute the environment massively for your own fun!

Holidaying alone is paradise for me. Grab some good books, dancing shoes, and head off to somewhere tropical and find some young latino fella to salsa with..... ahhhh the nostalgia!

Now I have OH its me, him and a BBQ in dorset :D lovely!!

It's you young things that are doing all this (joke!)

Seriously, I have a stepdaughter who has been on holiday to Australia and when she got married for the 3rd time, they did it on a beach in Jamaica.

My daughter had 2 holidays last year, to Cyprus and then to the Maldives. I don't ask!!! They're both working, it's up to them.

I've just read about someone who bought a house, did it up, furnished it, paid for their own wedding and had a 4-week honeymoon in South Africa! And is wondering why they're in £60K of debt apart from the mortgage? You tell me!

What to do when your friends all talk about their expensive holidays they've had or are planning to have? Ask yourself how they're paying for it all? And think of all those lenders rubbing their hands in glee as yet another sunshine holiday gets stuck on to the plastic. It's like Christmas - they'll maybe still be paying for it long after the turkey was eaten and the left-overs thrown away.

I know we're an older couple, so it maybe doesn't compare, but....one year we decided to have a wildlife pond made in our back garden. We deliberately chose that instead of a holiday. And it has given us delight every single day since then. There's always something different to see, it's like a soap-opera down there sometimes, the frogs a few weeks ago were acting like they were all on Viagra, and the starlings quarrel with each other.....A holiday is fine, you have the photographs and the sun-tan, and what then? It's not something that delights you every morning when you look outside the bedroom curtains.

    Just my fourpence!

It is tough, especially if you are single - the single supplement means that you cant get a late cheap deal :0( Of course, you could find someone to go with you - but what if you want to get away on your own?

I have never really holiday-ed anywhere exotic - last year it was Northern Cyprus, but I will probably want to see & do as much as I can when I get back from travelling (if I come back).

I have an idea that I will work for a year, take a year off, work for a year, take a year off and so on **back to earth with a bump**.

I think you should go wherever makes you happy - you dont necessarily have to go far afield to have a wonderful time ((although I need my sun quota & you cant always count on good old UK weather!!)) :0) xx

    Wise words as usual Auntymargaret!

Personally, I cant wait for our trip to the beach house, we'll have the dog with us, barbeques, candles & connect 4, It was a lovely surprise last year, fingers crossed for the weather! ( me & OH had only just met when we hada night there) and this year I just cant wait. Apart from the food and wine  it'll cost us less than a tenner on the megabus to get there. For both of us!

You are totally right Margaret. However if someone has no debt & wants to go on holiday to these far flung places, once or twice a year - surely that's up to them? If holidays are a luxury to someone then I would rather save money to do something I enjoy than to waste it on bits & bobs throughout the year.

I would rather not have to work at all & have every day as a holiday, but that's me dreaming again :0) xx

Just imagine if you had spend a fortune on a really expensive holiday somewhere exotic - and then when you were there you come down with some local bug and are too ill to enjoy it! This has happened to three people I know, and one of them even came back with typhoid!

I find this a strangely comforting thought when I can't afford to book a holiday myself .... at least if I have only spent a small amount for a holiday in this country (like: staying at home) I know I am not likely to come back with maleria - or something.....

I love holidaying on my own. You can do whatever you want whenever you want. If you want to look round shops all day there isnt some moaning bloke next to you walking round in a huff all day. There are some cheap deals to have out there to go abroad. Often it's the flights that cost the money so if you would be prepared to go on a coach holiday that could bring down the price. You also don't feel so alone on those as you are part of a group. Look at the really cheap deals on the coach part of this site:
