I see you get to choose what browser to use in the new Windows.

Is it just me or are most people just completely underwhelmed with the release of windows 7.

I'm sure there's a few enthusiasts out there,
but i think most people don't give a flying houdini.
They're still grappling with the last debacle.

There's been a massive buzz about 7, much more than there was for Vista, XP or even 2000.

Indeed, massive buzz - preorders are shifting like no other OS.

  • It's a very nice OS. Luckily, I managed to get in on the discounted copies before they all sold out.

Massive congratulations to the EU though on their stunning victory on being able to choose a browser. I could have done that anyway, amazingly enough, but still it's the thought that counts. I hope it's as successful and as good for the consumer as their brilliant decision to break up the domestic footy rights. I certainly appreciated paying more for the same games and suffering the abysmal Setanta coverage in their last masterstroke.

No, 'they' didn't. Each retailer stopped the discounted price when their allocated stock had all been sold.

Its rather publicised "free" beta/RC helped stir up some interest, as did Microsoft's drip-feeding of heavily discounted pre-orders.

It'll be business as usual soon enough though.

I'm talking about even before those two steps happened, way back when it was pre Milestone etc. The two you mentioned have managed to do something rarely seen with an operating system launch, having Joe Public buying it on release rather than just a minority of technology enthusiasts.

Not really much of a surprise? Seems like rather basic marketing to me. The Netbook market wants Windows, it even shunned Linux when the product was cheaper. The ideo of what a Netbook was originally has become so far diluted now that absorbing a small increase in what the OEM has paid out for Windows won't matter, consumers still want Windows.

The pre-order discounts meant that the OS was actually a sensible price. That was the main reason for me buying it. Paid 90 quid for the pro version (I want XP Mode) after running the RC on my main machine for a while (I previously didn't own a copy of Windows, so ran Linux on my main PC while dealing with Windows support in work). If i'd had to pay the full price then I wouldn't have bothered.

I guess I should be glad about the whole removal of IE fiasco meaning that the pre-orders in Europe were for the full version rather than an upgrade, otherwise I would've been stuffed.

It is a very nice OS. MS really are getting their act together these days.

Errrrrr the browser selection screen is displayed in Internet Explorer.

So now after ordering the pre-release E version, I'm now going to end up with a poxy upgrade version?

No, pre-orders are still going to get the full version.
