Jam jars that smell of pickles...

I have bought nasty jam before when I have been desperate for jars but didn't use it for anything as it was absolutely foul. You can get the jam for 38p in Mr T's which is pretty cheap for the cost of the jar0

This won't help if you need them quickly, but I have found that if I leave the lids off and put the jars in a relatively sunny place for a couple of days, the smell usually disappears.0

As above, I usually soak them in sterilizing fluid too. It's especially good on the lids from the 6p curry sauce jars.

try marmalade jars from Lidl, 27p I think, got a stock in last year and used the jars to bottle peaches, every one sealed perfectly.....0

I use the jars from 4p curry sauce, and cheap mayonaisse. They don't smell after they have been in the dishwasher. I did have a couple of jars that had had pickled onoins in that still smelt so I kept them for making chutney.
I wouldn't buy something just to get the jars. Instead stone and freeze the plums till you have some more jars. Ask around you will be suprised how many people will get them back out of the recycling box for you, or as freecycle. I gave some away on freecycle last year, as now I never throw a jar away, but ended up with more than I could ever need.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

Good evening OS'ers, after your wisdom again please (for my fabulous BIL).
He's made some lovely pickled onions (now sadly eaten), and wants to reuse the rubber jar seals.
Trying to be OS and reuse, is there any way to get rid of the Oniony/ vinegary pong, without perishing the rubber? I thought posibly bicarb, but am unsure TBH.
Big Thanks in advance, as always,

Try soaking them in lemon juice.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0

I dont use the rubber seals! I just fold up cling film and seal the jars with that - the lids are purely decorative!0

This thread has some advice that may help:
Jam jars that smell of pickles...
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.
