kippers
I have been given loads of yellow plums and i have made 4 jars of jam but i want to make more but i have run out of jam jars. I have loads of jars that have had pickled onions in but they smell of pickles.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the smell so i can use them for more yellow plum jam?

Do you have a dishwasher - that'll do the trick
Other than that, hot soapy water (really really hot) to wear rubber gloves
and a good couple of rinses. treat the lids in exactly the same waymake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks but they have already been in the dishwasher and they still smell.0

I have tried just about everything (dishwasher, bicarb, soda crystals, washing up liquid, lemon juice) and still haven't found a way of getting rid of it
I ended up having a box of pickle and chutney jars and jam and conserve jars and keeping them apart 0 -
Same here, so I now have jars for pickle/chutneys and jars for jam.0

Thats what i normally do but i've run out of jam jars. Anyone know where i can get cheap jars? I may try freecycle.0

I've just thought...i reckon i only need about 4-6 jars. What about if i bought the cheapest jam i can find (ie Tesco value mixed fruit) and empty the jam. What could i do with this jam? (i hate waste)...could i freeze it in portions to use in cakes?0

It's worth a try.0

Sometimes jam goes a bit runny if you freeze it. Why not make jam tarts? These usually freeze really well. HTH Jackie. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your window

I've no idea whether it will work, but try putting a tea bag in the jar for a few hours (I would think that overnight should do it, otherwise it'll be another for your 'didn't work' list). I discovered this a few months ago for stinky shoes: works a treat. Worth a try.
