I disagree. If you were useless you would not have made those discs! Well done for that. Loads of people don't bother then end up with major problems.

It could have been anything from malware to hard disk problems, or maybe Windows just got fed up! Difficult to tell now.

one small suggestion:
is your keyboard connected by usb or ps2? (usb looks like a usb plug and ps2 is different and usually green)?
i have several pcs that will not power the keyboards from usb untill AFTER the select boot option screens. some times a reboot or two gets power before it hits the selection screen and you can then choose which option you require.
it could just be as simple as you shut down badly (or vista *thinks* you have [can you tell the annoyance there?!]) and it offers what you want to do but due to the keyboard not getting power you cannot selece and your pc sits their gracefully waiting for a responce from you - which you are not able to give!
