Help!!!!! My pc is dead!!!!

Ok so my pc is dead! before i start i'll just let you know its a hp,we've had it about 19 months and its running on vista premium.
basically i turn it on and it makes a noise for a split second(the normal powering up noise) and gets to the blue screen offering esc,f10,f11 etc.....but goes no further,it will also not let me do esc,f10,f11 its just totall unresponsive! so just had to hit it off at tower, did this once then left it a bit and tried again but exactly the same response!

two things just to let you know in case its of any relevance.
for a while now it doesnt always when it boots up have the key lock, num lock, caps lock icons loaded onto ther task bar...sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt....if it doesnt it runs fine and if computer is restarted they pop up.
today when i had switched it on it didnt load them.about 4pm i noticed that the speaker icon had a cross and it said no device is installed.i thought to myself oh thats odd it really didnt boot up properly today i'll switch it off then on again.
it never came back on!!!! boo hoo!! it just does as i first described.

on thinking about it the speakers were there this morning as i put some songs on youtube for my girls........does the fact they've gone and this is happening mean that i could have picked up a virus or something??
i have no idea on the technical side at all i just know its broke and im gutted and i dont see how i can sort it if its stuck at that point!! please help!!

From your description, it will switch on, it just won't boot into Windows. So the recovery disk may fix it.

Sorry if I am mistaken, but from your post I understood the PC will switch on, but not boot into the OS? If there is power, you should be able to open the cd drawer to insert the disc. Then switch off and back on. If it is a software problem, you should be able to recover using this method.

Not sure how the HP's are set up, but if there is a back up on a separate partition of the hard drive, (usually called a 'factory restore'), then that can be used if you can access the drive. However a factory restore will wipe all your data and after-market programs. You have backed up your data I hope.

  • i dont think i can acess it as all it goes to is that damn blue screen which is the very first thing it does as soon as you hit the power on button.
yeah we have an external hardrive that has all our music, photos etc on it....well there will be a few photos lost as i think the last two times i put photos on i didnt get around to it but not the end of the world.dont know how i stand with my itunes for the ipod though?
not bothered about the factory restore to be honest....we have those things on the external hard drive and we only have very basic uses like surfing the net most days...a very small amount of downloading and on the pc the itunes.
