Internet in your mobile cost
Hi everyone,
I am looking to get a phone with internet next.
However, I find it difficult to find one that goes for max £30 a month (Nokia 5800 at the worse, Nokia N97 at the best - these are the phones I am looking into) that already includes internet if you are looking at contract for max 18months.
So I have 2 questions - how much internet does Orange's 250MB give you? Like how many hours?
Does anyone know how it works with O2 internet Add on? I don't fully understand their charges... Can you add internet on a lower tariff?

Orange did me a free BB curve 8900 with 500 mb browsing, 900 mins and unltd txts for 25 a month. That was after about a week of negotiating though, so you may need to persevere, but it is possible if you shop around and make them work for your hard earned!0

I am a heavy internet user on my mobile. My 1gb allowance with 3 has never been higher than about 100mb used in a month. This includes hours facebooking, googling, wikipedia'ing and emailing photos etc.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Virgin mobile are doing the Nokia 5800 for free on an £18 a month contract, with 150 mins, 500 texts, and unlimited internet. Or you can up it to 500 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet for £25 per month (18 month contracts).0

I pay £35 per month for a G1 with 700 minutes, unlimited text and "unlimited" (FUP'ed to 3GB) internet, however thanks to QuidCo and a redemption deal I actually pay £17.92pm over 18 months.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0

Mobile internet depends on what you use it for and the sort of pages you go to and load. Lots of what many other people used is very heavily text based (ie googling, wiki, using facebook) and the phones are usually optimised to get the best usage out of the net allowance, and also get the best mobile webpage content for the consumer. All "unlimited" internet allowances are subject to a fair use policy; and if you go over this, you'd be paying some hefty charges. However, some companies may offer you a mobile phone contact AND a USB broadband dongle contract, with a reduction for taking both out at the same time. The contracts will be the same length, and again, you will be limited by how many GB are with the dongle contract, or by a fair use policy (I know T-Mobile have throttled some people's connections for excessive usage, and 3 charge £15 per GB over your allowance you go)
I think I saw something on here before from you about using Skype via your phone; if you wanted to use VOIP or MSN you would be much better off going to 3, as their phones have all the software built in; however, on Skype Mobile you can't use the SkypeIn or SkypeOut services or video calling, nor would these work well if you used your phone as a modem (which pretty much every company restricts you from doing, unles you are willing to pay even more)
O2's Internet bolt-on is payable extra (currently just over 7 quid) and is for mobile internet use ONLY, unless they state otherwise to you.
Also, right now, there isn't much chance of you getting the N97 on an 18 month £30 contract. When I got my phone, I had to get a 24 month £25 contract for the 5800 (atm using the W995 whilst I wait for stock to come in) and they told me the cheapest you will get is £35 a month, unless you have a very good retention offer. You'd be better off trying a different cheaper phone that has the same or similar features to the N97 (and it doesn't have to be touchscreen) to be able to get what you want.** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

Elfen - thank you very much for the detailed reply. I am not out of my existing contract yet so I am hoping that by October when the Nokia N97 is around for few months already there will be some better deals.
However I think the Nokia 5800 will do just the job I want it to do. I am only going to go on Facebook and here on MSE and stuff when I am bored at lunchtime.
Wulliemac - thank you for that, that looks like it just suits the bill! Will check on Virgin's websites later.0
