forgot to warn you about Fiumicino airport.Beware! If you go to Fiumicino airport never never take a taxi from a person waiting inside the airport offering you a taxi they are bogus and they will charge you very very dear according to their wish.Instead go outside to taxi rack where they are obliged to abide the law. >:(

    Hi!

We (a family of three) went to Rome at the end of November and stayed in the Termini area (at a hostel called The Beehive: http://www.the-beehive.com/ ) on Via Maghera off Via Marsala (ie. east of the station). I thought the area just west of the station didn't look so great - but that was just my general impression.

We were out in the evening (till about 7pm or 8pm) all over the tourist parts of the city and the Termini area and I didn't feel unsafe in either areas. In the Termini area I didn't see any prostitutes or drug-users, just homeless people sleeping in phone boxes etc.

I wouldn't walk around at night on my own, but I wouldn't do that anywhere (that's probably just over-cautious me!!).

Our hostel was very clean and nice and I would stay there again. Right next door was the (English speaking) Enjoy Rome office ( http://www.enjoyrome.com/main.html ), which was pretty helpful.

Hope you enjoy your trip :)

Hello - me again - I forgot to say that if you are flying to Ciampino airport (which is where most of the budget airlines fly to) you can get to the Termini station very cheaply:

Get on the bus outside the departures & arrivals area (look for the bus shelter which is to the right hand side of the departures as you face the departures door). The last stop on this bus is Anagnina, then go down the stairs to the Anagnina Metro Station. The bus ride was 1EURO each (cheap!!). The ticket machine was broken at the time that we went (end of Nov '04), so everyone bought their tickets from the driver.

Then get on Metro Line A to get to Termini. Again this should be 1EURO pp. You can get these from the ticket machines in the foyer. Although, there were lots of people who didn't bother getting a ticket anyway because the gates were up and you could just walk through to catch the metro.

Going back to the airport is the same in reverse, but you have to allow for more time as the buses go every 40-50 minutes, so you might have a bit of a wait.

I loved Rome, although was only there for 3 days. Will hopefully go back, as threw my coin in the Trevi fountain.

We just walked and walked as there is so much to see. I always take a couple of guide books from the library, read up before-hand, if you can, to get an idea of what you want to see. They also advise of good, cheap places to eat.

Outside the Collosseum are guides looking for buisness - usually I would avoid such things, but I was advised by my friend, who lives in Italy, to take a guide as they are University students and this is there 'chosen subject'. It was well worth it.

    Have a fab time

We stayed in an apartment, not very central but in a quiet area of Rome and easy access via buses and metro - lots of shops and a fantastic daily market nearby.

I thought it was very reasonable and the guy who owns it is a real sweetie. Very hospitable and welcoming. Worth a look I think. The apartment we stayed in was the smaller of the two on the website, the other is a new addition.

No affiliation other than being a previous guest there, and able to recommend.

    Hi

I have just come back from Rome on Wednesday. I had originally booked ( or thought I had) a room at 66 Imperial after a recommendation from this site. However when I rang to confirm this last Thursday I got a reply from the saying they were FULL! Anyway I then booked another hotel via https://www.hotelconnect.co.uk
Got a great deal for the Hotel Exedra which is one of the best hotels in Rome. Very posh!
Trevi fountain is a bit disappointing but St Peters was mind blowing!

We also flew into Ciampino. DO NOT get the metro to Aganina as the bus connections here are only every 40 mins. Get the bus to the Ciampino train station and then get mainline to Termini. Very quick cheap and easy.

I will have a look at the restaurants we ate in. We went for cheap Italian ones rather than big famous ones. Very reasonable and great atmosphere.
