"In Rome, my advice is avoid hotels near the Termini, or Main rail station. They are the cheapest in the city but the area is dodgy and best avoided".

This has been a great topic.  My mother is going to Rome in March and she is now worried as her accommodation is in the dodgy Termini Station Area.  Has anyone stayed in 59 Manin Street B&B and is it ok or is the area best avoided?

    Hi there janeytel,

I think I've just found the B&B on the Hostelworld website - and it's got a review! Click here to view it. It doesn't seem too bad.

    Hi

I think you mean 69 - have a look at this...
    http://rome-hotels.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d496935-Reviews-69_Manin_Street_De_Luxe-Rome_Lazio.html

It doesn't look like you will be disappointed! That's a tremendous rating from tripadvisor!

You could find somewhere in a slightly better area for about 80/100€ a night in March on https://www.venere.com . But given the ratings she won't have to worry.

I'm sure your Mum will have a great time wherever she stays. I'm off on Jan 17 - Christmas present from daughter!

    Not everybody agrees however...

"The area around the main railway station (Stazione Termini) has a huge amount of hotels, but is not really a place where you would like to spend your evenings. Like most railway stations areas around Europe, you might find some people that you might not want to be seen out with. I wouldn't go as far as to call it a particular dangerous area to live in, but in my opinion it's not Rome at its best (although the area has a wide range of hotel alternatives, while it might be more difficult to find an affordable place to stay in if you go for a more central location)"

    and
"i totally agree with what Janne said i.e. avoid Termini and book a hotel near Piazza Navona, The Pantheon or Spanish Steps. Cheap hotels near the Spanish Steps include the Anglo Americano (cheap but don't be fooled by its' official 4 star category as it is actually closer to 2 and a half), Hotel Pincio and Hotel King. Hotels near Piazza Navona include the Raphael (fantastic 4 star but very, very pricey), Hotel Teatro Pace (my own favourite and only opened this year i.e. 2004) and Hotel Ponte Sisto a charming 4 star owned by Irish Priests. I agree, it's probably a good area to stay being so close to the main station. Makes access to all the city and outside of the city too much easier. Didn't look that dodgy at night to me - I'd say no worse and maybe even better than Kings Cross!!

If you want a change from doing Rome - you can get a train out to the coast, takes about half an hour to get to Ostia which bustles in the Summer.

This is all making me yearn to go back :(;)
  • Before you book the hotel check to see if you can get a better rate on:

    http://www.hotelscomparison.com

It searches 12 hotel booking companies. You can search for all hotels in Rome or just on a specific hotel name.

This is my site. Let me know what you think?

hi there if you want to want to travel by underground and bus i suggest you buy the daily ticket called 'BIG' from the main Termini station or the weekly pass.
Beware of the number '64' bus it takes you around all the sights but it's very well known to be full of pickpockets .Watch out for gipsy children in groups as well they are very quick to take anything you have without you noticing.
Enjoy all the pizza places they are all good,go in the small streets near Piazza Navona and you will find local eating places very good prices one of them is called 'La montecarlo' and is next to the cinema Via Vittorio emanuele just behind Navona square ;D it's really cheap and the food is excellent and traditional.there are also a lot of traditional small shops if you walk in the cobbled paths near the centre. There are a few tourist kiosks around teh centre where you can get free maps (also available at all macdonalds) and free information.
I hope you enjoy your stay!
Buon Viaggio (have a nice trip!) ;)

  • The area around the Termini is grim, but no worse than London.Like every main train/bus station in the world, keep your belongings with you and be aware of pickpockets. Most of the hotels in and around the area are reasonable places to stay and it is wonderfully central. Buy your metro tickets from the Tabachi on the station if you come in by bus direct from the airport. Check out the Orviesse department store just by the station and there are lots of nice little boutiques walking towards Via Tritone,Berberini area.
