We tried all the stop pull harnesses for our dalmatian and they just seemed to strengthen his chest and make him worse. we tried the halti but it cut into his face. We now use the gentle leader which is very similar to the halti but has a better fit and doesnt rub. He still hates it and rubs his face on walls/legs/bums/floor when possible but most of the time hes ok with it

    Hi
I have boxers and have tried every harness out there!! None of them worked, they just made the dogs even stronger as they were using the muscles in their neck and back to pull me!! I would try going to a good pet shop and seeing what they recommend, but in my experience the only way to stop pulling is lots of training with your dog. See if you have any training classes in your area and give them a call. I went down this road after spending a fortune on different harnesses and leads etc and now my dogs walk really well on a bog standard lead and collar.

    Good luck

  • the mikki walk rite is a training harness - when you pull back on it, the lines which go under the dogs fornt legs tighten, and it really 'puts the brakes' on the dog somehow - I was worried it may be uncomfortable, but my mums dog likes it and puts her paws through the loops without being asked, so I dont think it can be! The idea is that you use it to help train the dog to walk to heel, along with praise and treats, and it seems to work well, the idea being that you can then dispose of the harness - my mum still uses it on short walks as she knows she has more control, and it seems to work for her.

I have one of these harnesses as it was was raved about a greyhound forum i use and i was having trouble finding a non-pull harness that fit well and wouldn't rub delicate greyhound skin
http://www.2houndsdesign.com/1-inch-Martingale-Harness-Medium-and-Large-Breeds-pr-345.html I was impressed with the quality and it has velvet covered leg/girth strap so it doesn't rub and has fastening clips on both sides so the dog doesn't have to step into it. I'd tried an ancol no-pull one but the clips fastened right over the spine so you had to fit it too loose.

There is some training your supposed to use alongside it and i found it worked well. When my dog decided to do some acrobatics i found him much easier to control and the pulling reduced so i can now walk him back on a collar again.

We've recently had a dog behaviourist round and she sold us a kind of halti/bridle type thing for our GS. I don't have a link to is, but it's different to a halti in that it attaches with one liip for the nose and one for the head, then clips to the collar and the lead.
She was a nightmare to walk before hand with constant pulling, but now I can walk her with my toddler in the pushchair and me waddling along at a bit of a dawdle (I'm 6 1/2 months pregnant). If anyont is interested I could probably find the link to it...

Thanks everyone for the info. The local pet shop didn't sell any no pull harnesses so that was a wash.

She's decided to give one of the walkrite ones a try and see how the dog gets along with that. I'm going to grab one on line for her. Lets hope it works.
