A friend of mine has a collie cross that is a bit of a puller when walking. She's recently heard about the no pull harnesses but wants to know if they're worth it before she gets one.

Since she doesn't have a net connection I said I'd have a look around, I have googled and they seem to get good reviews, but there seems to be a million and one makes, all with various pluses and minuses.

So I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone had used one. Or knew what make was best for her to try.

Thanks.

  • I think different ones work on different dogs my mum has a collie x lurcher, who is strong and lunges at cats - a mikki walkrite harness has made a massive difference to how she walks and how controllable she is...I was worried she may pull my mum of balance before, so I really rate it.

I'm a halti fan, but I know they don't suit all dogs - some dogs can't get used to the round the nose bit, but they do a padded one which suits mine better.
I like them because they stop my mutt from pulling me over (she's a bull terrier and too strong for me on a normal lead) , and they give control of the head - vital if the dog takes flying leaps at people, which mine does.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Thanks. So in general they are a good thing, it all depends on finding the type your dog responds too?

  • yep... and what fits ok - haltis go on the face, so fit some dogs better than others - my mum's dog hates having anything put over her face, so the walkrite, which fits like a harness was far better for her.

Also try (or look at) The Gencons and the Dogmatics which I use on my Great Danes, I find the dogmatics (the leather ones) are a much better fit than the Halti's and much better tolerated.
We have also used the 'canny collar' but the attatchements were not quite in the right place to control two 10 stone dogs who like to pull like trains.

  • if you take the dog to a decent independant pet shop they will often let you try on a few alternatives and see what works for your dog

Thanks everyone. I'll pass the info on.

Well worth a trip to the local pet shop to see if they'll let her try a few.

We just got a harness for our dog as we think her first owner rubbed her nose in her dog mess as when she goes to toilet sometimes she takes off like a bullet the second she has done it and we were worried she could be hurt with the collar pulling it. Anyway as well as less likely to hurt herself when she takes off she has stopped pulling when walking. She only pulls sometimes but that has stopped and we have more control over her. We went to our local friendly pet shop who recommended getting one with extra padding as she is very short fur and to avoid rubbing which we never thought about.

i would recommend the dog matic too. the design means it doesnt ride up and irritate their eyes. they also offer more specific sizing than harnesses like the halti, which my dog had grown out of by 10 months old,
