NEC e616 unlocking/data modem

this is for those expert techies among you. i need a 3G data card for use another country ...but only temporarirly as 3.5G coming in Sep ...so reluctant to buy one.
I have one of these NEC bricks just out on contract (as an aside I think the service from 3 is outstanding compared with Orange and even living in deepest marches countryside am never without a 3G signal)
it occurs to me that if I get this phone unlocked (which you seem to be able to do remotely for £10) that in effect it can be used instead of a 3G data 'card ' modem (obviously with appropriate SIM)...or am I being too simplistic.
