Hi, I'm brand new to card making, can anyone point me in the right direction to start buying supplies, many thanks.
Hi TinyPablo. If you're just starting out, it might be a good idea to look through the thread - you'll find lots of links to free images and papers (if you have access to a printer). Also the websites that have good deals on and cheap p&p.
You can buy card blanks and envelopes from Tesco, WHSmith, Hobbycraft, etc. For a basic card, I aim at paying about 10p per card. Poundland sometimes have card-making kits, you can pick up some fairly decent embellishments. Double-sided tape and a glue-stick are a must (again Poundland). Lots of the ladies on here also buy stamped images from ebay.
You'll need a decent pair of scissors. Everything else in my stash I've just built up as I've gone along. I wouldn't be without my guillotine now, but I didn't buy it until I'd been card-making for a couple of months.
Some of the magazines can be useful for the free gifts and inspiration, but can be quite costly. I received a load through freecycle - you could try asking there for bits and pieces.some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it0 -
Hello TinyPablo,
If you have any questions that are more specific then everyone on this thread is really nice and will help you. What kind of things do you like? Decoupage, Stamping, TeaBag folding etc etc? What kind of things are you looking for?
If you follow this thread back everyone has posted links to their blogs which you could visit for inspiration.
There is a great shop called www.craftsuperstore.co.uk which always has good prices and a wide range of products.
I think Jailhousebabe covered absolutely everything and she was spot on. Poundland is a great place to go.
Also.. My final word.. invest in a good trimmer. I spent probably close to a hundred pounds on all different types of trimmer.. Fiskars, Poundland, Staples etc etc and in the end the XCut Gullotine is the best on the market in my honest opinion.. it is the only one i've found to cut straight!
Welcome to the world of cardmaking and I hope you will stick around!:xmastree:Self Certified Christmas Addict:xmastree:0 -
Jailhousebabe Good luck tomorrow with your exam
PLM Fabulous Christmas bauble. I would love to do 2 of my grand daughters.
Rusty Last time I tried to leave comments on your blog I couldn't see the word verification thingy.0 -
Hello Tinypablo Welcome to the cardmaking thread. It can be expensive when you start a new hobby, if you search the web you will find lots of freebies on there. Do you have access to a printer? I posted a few links a couple of pages back, try those. I can also recommend Craft superstore they are very quick with orders and if you have a problem customer service is excellent.0

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I helped a friend make her wedding invitations and really enjoyed it so was thinking of making my own and for my wedding next year and have been inspired by all the beautiful cards posted here. I have started reading through the first thread but think it may take a few days to get through all three!
Thanks again.0 -
Wow it's just taken me two hours to catch up on today's posts! (with a few blog diversions) so my post will be fairly brief.
Rainmac - I think you'd make a brilliant designer - go for it - after all you have been published & not many can say that.
JHB - Good luck with your exam - what is it? I knew a girl who did it the other way ie thought her A level was pm when it was am - disaster! Your stitching looks so real!
Flourgirl - Hope you have a super holiday with GD.
Gemma - I don't think it was the stitching just that so many people are on holiday - it's unusual for me to be early!
Padster - sorry to hear your frozen shoulder diagnosis - 2 of my SILs have had that, both OK now but it took a while.
PLM - beautiful bauble!0 -
Rainmac my little kitty is going to vet later today. They are going to test his heart again to see if anything shows and if so he will need to go and see cardiologist.
Rusty - I have blender pen but don't really like it. I think easier blending colours.
Gemma - I will get a card done for challenge over weekend. (will need to be fake stitches though as cant sew)
PLM - Lovely Bauble
Marg - Cards are for the SOS appeal. I am doing it for one of the area co-ordinators who made an appeal on docrafts site. They send parcels out to troops and want to put 10 christmas cards in each so that they have cards to send home to their own family and friends. They are looking for all types christmas cards as will be going to wifes , children, parents etc. If anyone wants details pm me.
Re docrafts magazine I always order from cutting edge crafts. Free p&p and really quick delivery.Yearly Grocery Budget - £100.77/ £3500. January Treats Budget - £11.80 / £100.0 -

Have fun flourgirl.
Hamish - hope you get good news at the vet's.
PLM - I love my xcut guillotine; luckily it was the first one I tried (after reading good reviews on this thread).
rusty - in case I forget, good luck for Monday. If it helps, I had one a couple of years ago and was told that some people feel claustrophobic and panic in there, so I just closed my eyes before I went in and kept them closed the whole time. I think it helped.
Marg - the exam is International Business and Global Strategy. Luckily it's only 1 hour, with 20 multiple choice and 2 short answer questions. I had only an hour and a half sleep last night, so I'll be struggling to stay awake today.
Thanks for the good wishes!some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it0
